It is perfectly agreeable to me for them to make a schedule any time the august body feels impelled to move. It may be just as well, since any earlier commitments would probably have to be changes considerably. However, I don't believe it would interfere too much with the conference schedule when it is made should the schools decide to schedule a few Service teams in advace. — Sorry I can't give vou any definite information about the Woerner boy from Central. I don't even remember what he looks like now. I do know that they had a very mediocre team and that Cramer was most of the show; he played center. This other boy may have been fair but certainly not very good or I would have been more impressed with his play. Spent tant cee in Chicago and Milwaukee after school stegn7 chee llth. of June. Since that time I have been pretty busy with my gardend@ and yard; have managed to play golf about twice a week. Better come down and try some of these easy courses. Visited with the Son while in Milwaukee. He is in the Army Air Corps and ig due to be sent to Santa Ana California in about a week. Dear Dad: I am writing you very confidentially. I am wondering if you would be interested in a position here in our Department of Physical Education for the duration. We have 520 V~12 boys, 120 Naval Aviation Cadets, and we will have between 600 and 800 or more A-12 Army boys by August 1. I am seeking four additional instructors. We cennot promise tenure only for the duration. On ow staff at the present time we have Henry Shenk, Reginald Strait and Ray Kanehl. I am some other valuable man who have ben teaching in important positions in Kenses high schools. I must seoure these four additional men sterting ages i and engage them on a twelve-months basise Doubtless you would not care to leave the Lawrence system under en unstable teure, but if you should care t carry on your graduate work you could take at least 5 hours each semester without interfering with your working selary, and since we have twelve months of school ‘now you would be able to get 12 or 15 hours on your advanced degree _ 4f you so desired. And too, you would possibly be able to go toa much larger job in peacetime ~ going from the University. We will have eight ox ten men in the department, according to the needs. We undoubtedly here at the University will keep a large staff of men to take care of the new phase of physical conditioning necessary for our future generation. So it might be possible for many of these men to stay on after peace is declared. That I cannot promise, of course, as all the men coming in now will be given an instructor's rating, and it is necessary for an instructor to be hired amuuelly. I have endeavored to give you the background and I would apprec- fate it if you would sit dom end write me confidentially what your reactions are toward a possible job with us. We could pay you $5000 per year, if arrangements could be made. We called Elmer Schaake's wife this morning to get Elmer's address, and find that he is at home, with an honorable discharge. I don't kmow what this means, but it might present another angle to you. If you are interested in our set-up, they might use Elmer in the Lawrence school system. This thought might occur . to you - why don't I use Elmer here. Well, Elmer is not a physical education man as much as you are - he is a coach, and we want you because you are primarily interested in physical education. P.C.Ae _ dume 30, 1943, . Mr. Ray S. I had a letter from Mrs. Troxell and I have answered trying to explain the situation. I feel that some of the difficulty was mine for not having her come first for the history and physical examination and then doing the laboratory work and x-ray work on the following day. If I had followed that procedure I am sure the mis- understanding would never have arisen. We all enjoyed your news letter very much and when you write the next one please include us on your list. Dear Dr. Peete: I have just finished talking to Mrs. McSpadden and she was very happy indeed to hear from me because the Trotsells felt pretty much hurt about the matter. I have asked Mrs. MeSpadden to write you because she can perhaps give you a better picture than I can. I have never met the Trotselle and for that reason I am further re- moved from the situation than Mrs. Molyadaan. lire. MoSpadden slso says that she is going to stop in to see you some time soon when she is in Kansas City. From all reports that I get from Mrs. McSpadden, apparently — an awkward situation was presented, but nobody blames you one iota for the thing that happened. It is just one of those situations. I explained to Mrs. MoeSpadden that your technician had asked to be relieved of her work but due to the scarcity of trained technicians she had been asked to stay on, and the fact that she had worked under pressure doubtless accounted for her lack of proper inhibitions when the Trotsell's came. Se Alien University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: Ever since returning from the meeting in Washington D.C. last Aucust I have talked, in all quarters, the need fon continuing the athletic program in our schools just as long as it igs possible to do so. If the program is to be curtailed, or completely eliminated it should be done only when it is impossible to go on. I have a feeling that there will be many boys in our schools next Fall and they will want to compete. Of course it will not be competition on the same level as in other years, but at that it should be interesting and very much worth while. I have heard rumors of a meeting of the directors and representatives the 2end. of May, either here in Kansas City or Lincoln, Nebraska. However, they are only rumors. If this meeting is held I have an idea something will be done about next year's schedules at that time. No doubt there is the feeling that there is no hurry about this since there would of necessity be many changes made. That has been true of the football schedule, and there are many months to go before that season opens. A the meeting of the basketball coaches last year, at the time of the schedule making I believe you made some remarks about me making out the schedule in the future, but I don't remember very much discussion about it at the time, and nothing has been said, from any source about that. Suppose you ar too busy to plav golf at this time. I have been out once, and did very well at that session. Hove we can play some this summer. Very cordially yours, /\ 2 R. E.
