Dear Dad:

I am writing you very confidentially. I am wondering if you
would be interested in a position here in our Department of Physical
Education for the duration. We have 520 V~12 boys, 120 Naval
Aviation Cadets, and we will have between 600 and 800 or more A-12

Army boys by August 1.

I am seeking four additional instructors. We cennot promise
tenure only for the duration. On ow staff at the present time we
have Henry Shenk, Reginald Strait and Ray Kanehl. I am
some other valuable man who have ben teaching in important
positions in Kenses high schools. I must seoure these four additional
men sterting ages i and engage them on a twelve-months basise

Doubtless you would not care to leave the Lawrence system under
en unstable teure, but if you should care t carry on your graduate
work you could take at least 5 hours each semester without interfering
with your working selary, and since we have twelve months of school
‘now you would be able to get 12 or 15 hours on your advanced degree
_ 4f you so desired. And too, you would possibly be able to go toa
much larger job in peacetime ~ going from the University.

We will have eight ox ten men in the department, according to
the needs. We undoubtedly here at the University will keep a large
staff of men to take care of the new phase of physical conditioning
necessary for our future generation. So it might be possible for
many of these men to stay on after peace is declared. That I cannot
promise, of course, as all the men coming in now will be given an
instructor's rating, and it is necessary for an instructor to be

hired amuuelly.

I have endeavored to give you the background and I would apprec-
fate it if you would sit dom end write me confidentially what your
reactions are toward a possible job with us. We could pay you $5000

per year, if arrangements could be made.
