1939-1940

ALLEN, ROBERT- center- 20 -home, Lawrence; graduate of Lawrence high
school, 1937; coached by Hdd Wood. Youngest son of Coach Forrest C.
Allen. Has been playing basketball since his kindergarten days. A fine
ball handler and all-around player. Holds down the "quarterback" posi-
tion which his brother Milton played in 1935 and 1946. Played guard,
center and forward in high school. Good man on defense. Runs the team
on offense and does his share of the scoring. A junior.

.837,ING, DONALD- forward< 21 -home, Lindsborg; graduate of Lindsborg
high school, 1936; prepped by Coach 0.C. Ostenberg. Brother of Ray Hb-
ling, Kansas’ All-American forward who graduated in 1936. After a med-
jocre freshman year, battled his way into a first string forward berth
on the 1938 championship team. Was in pretty much of a Slump last year.
Good on set shots and an excellent free thrower. A very good rebound
man for his size. Makes up for lack of height with worlds of fight.

ENGLEMAN, HOWARD- forward- 19 -home, Arkansas City; graduate of Arkansas
City high school, 1937; played under Coach Everett Nicholson. <A sensa-
tion on the 1938 Jayhawk freshman team. An excellent scorer last year
as a sophomore. Finished in the first ten of the Big Six scoring lead-
ers last winter. Set a new K.U. individual scoring record for one game
when he chalked up 27 points against Oklahoma here last year. Almost
impossible to guard around the basket. A Junior.

HARP, RICMARD- Guard- 21 -home, Kansas City, Kan. ; graduate of Rosedale
high school in Kansas City, 1936; coached by Roscoe Brown,. A great guard
as a sophomore at K.U. Went into a slump last year. His work on defense
fell down and his shooting was off. Appears to be back in stw@ide now.

If he plays as well as he appears capable of playing, he should rank
high nationally among college defense men. At his best, he is a bril-
liant defensive player and a deddly accurate long shot.

HOGBEN, WILLIAM- guard- 19 -home, Kansas City, Mo.; graduate of South-
west high school in Kansas City, 1937; coached by Mel Bishop. Played
frequently during the first semester last year and then was lost to the
team because of scholastic ineligibility during the second term. Would
have lettered had it not been for this. A smooth guard. Was in the
starting lineup at guard in the second game of the season thiw winter.

HUNTER, T.P.- forward or guard- 22 -home, Oklahoma City, Okla. Graduate
of Central high school in Oklahoma City, 1937; coached by Clarence
Breithaupt. Was a member of the Jayhawks’ crack freshman team in 1938.
Scholastically ineligible for varsity competition the first semester
last year and did not see any action the second semester. A lanky boy.

JOHNSON, ROBERT- forward- 19 -home, Kansas City, Kan.; graduate of
Shawnee Mission high school at Merrian, 1938; played under Coach Harold
Reade. The best prosnect in an wnusually weak sophomore crop. May not«
see much action this winter because of the number of veterans available,
but will be valuable in the next few years. Looks like the old Jayhawk
star, Fred Pralle, and has the same driving spirit.
