\> March 24, 1943. Mr. Fred J. Pralle, Phillips Petrolew Co., Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Dear Fred: Congratulations first upon being the head of a family, - and secondly upon your fine work in Denver where your team won the National A.A.U. Championship. Now, reverting back to that fine little daughter of yours. I am sure that I extended words of congratulation upon the . arrival of the young lady, but here's another one just in case I overlooked that very necessary detail. T am very glad that you like your job in the Department of Economics, and I am sure that that goal-throwing of yours last Saturday night in Denver didn't hurt your job any. I know how conspicuous you feel as a civilian. Doubtless it won't be long before you will be insisting that you get in. Again wishing you the best of all good things, I an Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS J. K R. c T M. - E. A. Eee . Ss. Allen Athletic Department University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Congratulations to you and the boys as Champioms of the Big Six Con- ference. Your winning of championships does seem like an old story, but it certainly is compensation to us Jayhawkers down here in Sooner territory after these disastrous football seasons. Nice going, Doc, it's really a great feeling to see you continually "whip Hell out of them", It has been quite some time since I have written so I'll bring you up to date on my activities. I am now the very proud father of a seven month old daughter. Also, I am now working in Bartlesville permanently. I have a very interesting job and one that I like very much in the Department of Economics. At present, I am deferred from the army, but am rather anxious to be called. I1 feel quite conspicious as a civilian and to be home while most of my friends are off fighting somewhere. We have a basketball team here at Phillips this year but we are not taking any extended road trips. They are not allowing basketball to interfere with our work in any way, and I am really happy about that. Give my best regards to Mrs. Allen and the family. Dear Dr. Peete: I thought you would be tanttien th Mea seen of letters I have sent to Kent, Culbertson and larry Stream for their fine response yesterday morning. A colored boy went to the bottom of the swimming pool, and since all the boys there were non-swimers, they ealled for help. Lerry Stream was working in the towel room at the time, so he ran out and jumped in the pool with all his clothes on and brought the boy out. Xent Culbertson gave artificial respiration. From all appearances the boy had a mild epileptic attack. Anyhow, when he became con- scious, he remembered nothing at all of what happened. I just thought you would like to know of the quick work of these two boys = Stream and Culbertson. Dear Mr. Kanehl: At the request cf our Kansas Sales Supervisor, Mr. M. T. "Speed" Swift, Kansas City, Mo., we are sending you today under separate cover and via parcel post a sample of the new three strand jute rope which is being used in our climbing ropes at this time as a substitute for unobtainable manila. I am sure that you, like other school, Army, and Navy officials, will agree that this jute, while agreeably not the equal of manila, does make a nice rope, and a fine substitute during wartime for unavailable manila. Mr. Swift has also asked me to advise you whether or not we can supply the platforms only for the #53 type jumpboard. I am awfully sorry that it is at this writing impossible to obtain the materials from which to fabricate these platforms. We do have a stock of #53 jumpboards made up, and so could supply the complete board if they would prove suitable. However, we would not want to disrupt our balances of completed boards to supply these platforms only, and I am sure you'll understand our reasons for not wishing to do this. We certainly hope that the quotation made you by our Mr. Swift on your equipment requirements will be the low bid, and that we may have the opportunity to serve you soon. “e should like very much to see the University of Kansas on the list of schools who swear by Porter apparatus because of the excellent quality and a of this equipment. Alan, July $1, 1943 Athletic Director University of Kansas Lawrence, Kan Dear Sir: According to a ruling of the War Production Board in connection with Iron and Steel Conservation Order M—-126, announced April 8, 1943, CERTAIN ITEMS OF GYMNASIUM EQUIPMENT MAY NOW BE MANUFACTURED "POR PROGRAMS APPROVED BY THE U.S. OFFICE OF EDUCATION". Perhaps you are aware of the Victory Corps Booklet No. 2, entitled "Physical Fitness Through Physical Education" published by the U.S. Office of Education. The program outlined in this booklet was prepared by a Committee anpointed by the Commissioner of Educa-— tion with the collaboration of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Physical Fitness Division of the Office of Defense Health and Welfare Service. In part, the program suggests that a variety in choice of exercises should be used. The program emphatically points out that exercise on appvara— tus is especially valuable in developing strength, agility and endurance. — We are sure that you recognize the seriousness of the situation that confronts the Nation today and are eager to do everything possible to assist in the War Effort. You know that such leaders as Eddie Rickenbacker, Lt. General Lewis B. Hershey, and others have appealed to the schools of the country to maintain stepped-up classes of physical education for ALL students. We have very few representatives available today. So, we hope that we may discuss your program and requirement by mail. If you will communicate with us todav and tell us what you plan to do in connection with your Physical Education Department, we shall be glad to assist you in the proper selection of equipment and in any other way within our power.
