August 19, 1943. Dr. Don Carlos Peete, . / 1500 Professional Bldg., Kansas City, Missouri. — Dear Don: | I was glad that you mentioned John Asher to me. It was hazy at first, and then I recalled that there had been quite a bit of difficulty that John had gotten. into regarding his academia olass work. I em sending you copy of a letter that Dr. Canuteson wrote to Dr. Gilbert Ulmer, and copies of my lstiers to Dean Lawson and Dr. Ulmer. You can seo by this timt he was in mich more difficulty. with the academia people than he was even with us. ‘Perhaps if Be had had a good record otherwise we would have been able to save him, but the boy just wouldn®t go to class, I an told. . This thing I wish to pass on to you, Don. If at any tine ‘any of your friends! children are in any difficulty I would not oon- sider at all thet you were presuming upon friendship to mention this to mee Had I imowm thet Jolm Asher was the sone of Dr. Asher I would have shown him additional courtesies, but of course I could not have helped him in this case because he had gone too far. How~ ever, it would be a pleasure to me if any of your friends should be in need of help and if I could reasonably give it. It would make me happy to do anything I could to befriend one of your friends, just as I know that you would do something to help one of my friends, but I would not expect you to do something that was impossible to do. Won't you feel perfeotly free to call upon me when one of your friends is in trouble? . it was a delight to visit with you and your good family. I am sorry that Don could not come down but your family is growing up so rapidly that if we do not see them from time to time we lose all conception of what they wore like when we saw than way back when. _ I assure you that I enjoyed the visit immensely with :ou and your family and it is mot because we are unsociable, but we just haven't driven anywhere it seems since the fuss has been on. But we are coming to ses you when we have promised ~- as soon as school is oute But don't let that keep you from visiting us at Lawrence. You are always weloome and it is a great pleasure indeed to have you and
