Nr. Dan Partner, Sports Desk, The Kansas City Star, Kensas City, Mo. Dear Dan: I am sending you a letter in confidence from Adolph Rupp, the coach at the University of Kentucky. This is regarding one of their star freshmen, Hallie Hudson. If you care to use any part of this letter in clinching the point that I struck at in proselyting in basketball as well as in football, then here is evidence of such a thing. These letters are a regular thing, and not an exception, but coming so close on the heels of my statement regarding in football and basketball I thought it might help the rabbit brothers who think I am only hitting at football te show this as a reguiar thing in traffie of athletes. This boy has nothing. He needs board, room, tuition, beoks, clethes, medical expenses, and what have yous If a coach does if for one he is forced to do it for the others. Then multiply this amount that it tekes to take care of this bey by the number of men on the first squad, and you have the answer for basketbell. Ifwe go “all out for Wer" in ancther year our athletic ranks of stars will _ be definitely depleted, and that will be the time for the educators . %o take hold, They will control the new deal in athletics from its . inception before it gets ahead of them as it has at presente This huge giant tusker which the edwators have been neither definitely ' gontrolling nor guiding by wilking along with and yet fearing the animal, will not exist in ite present forme Mhusin 1 eve the great sulentiote und the neni vile have mdi the reputation for tho University wderpaid proportionately, then I believe that I can glimpse the attitude of the educators when and if they get a chance to take a crack at this bigetime show, Certainly eempetitive athletics as they are run in 95% of the schools and pallaese have little or no educational values No longer do they look at a coach as a builder of character or morele, but one of the drivers of the ‘threeering cirouse That rine has lest his prestige as a developer and ea leader of young mone He ics just a circus trainer and the public doesnt take him seriously except when he appears before a business men's lumeheen or the quarterback club. (Off the record, Dan,) I might tell you that I got Charlie Black here at the University end it took a lot of workg Now here's a new story for you, but do not use my name in any of your yarns. Charlie Black played for Highland Park High School, just out of Topeka, in his junior 3 where he was a star player. His parents then moved tc City, where the father, C. B. Black, is southwestern manager of the Alemite Corporetion, Kansas City, Mo. The family have always been Jayhawkers, but in his senior year, Charlie starred in besketball, football, and track at Southwest. Previous to his pleying at Southwest he had once played in Kansas. _ . Here's the story, Dan. Dr. Rebert R. Taft, of the chemistry department at the University of Kansas, and Mr. C. B. Black were teammates together on the Midland Nebraske college team back in the early days. Dector Taft pleyed fullback and C. B. Biaek played tackle. The I then talked to Charlie Black's mother and father and learned thet while Charlie was in Wisconsin on @ legislative scholarship obtained by Stuhldurer for him, the drain on the family purse was too much, so they desired Charlie to come back from Madison to Lewrence. Mr. Dan Partner, Sperts Editor, The Kansas City Star, Kansas City, Mo. Dear Dan: Thenk you for your very good letter of recent date. Person- ally, Dan, I am not hard on the boys from Aggieville. They are a fine, aggressive, ambitious group of young chaps who want to get eshead, and who can blame them for that? It is interesting to note your correspondence from the down- town quarterbacks fram Manhattan. I am surprised that I was not mentioned in that smear campaign conducted by my collaborators. I feel a little hurt thet they left me out -- or did they? Maybe you just didn't want to hurt my feelings - I em so sensitive to criticisn. One of the boys told me this morning thet Ward Heylett told a Class B boy in basketball that "Phog" Allen didn't fool wjth any Class B boys, he just had to have the big shots.
