Sept. 12, 1941 Mr. Dan Partner Sports Desk, Kansas City Ster Kansas City, Mo. Dear Dan, This past summer Jim Reed of the aed wey CE Capitol wrote in | his sport columm that Warren Israe ormer and later of the Mexico School of Mines, ace football and “pasketball player, @ enroll at Kansas. I wrote Jim to the effect that Warren had ‘& freshman at Kansas this past year and before that he had oe Peace inst us the winter before in the Jayhawk Tournament at Topeke. conducted by Washburn College. May I tell you that Charlie Black's family moved from Overland Park a@ year ago last summer to Lawrence, Kansas and Charlie enrolled @ last September at the University of Kansas. Charlie will be eli le for the Jayhawker basketball team this winter. Wight I pull a and say that in my opinion your deta regarding Black is "un-Partner- donable", It is not like you, Dan, who gave you that bum steer? (Off the record, Dan,) I might tell you that I got Charlie Black here at the University end it took a lot of workg Now here's a new story for you, but do not use my name in any of your yarns. Charlie Black played for Highland Park High School, just out of Topeka, in his junior 3 where he was a star player. His parents then moved tc City, where the father, C. B. Black, is southwestern manager of the Alemite Corporetion, Kansas City, Mo. The family have always been Jayhawkers, but in his senior year, Charlie starred in besketball, football, and track at Southwest. Previous to his pleying at Southwest he had once played in Kansas. _ . Here's the story, Dan. Dr. Rebert R. Taft, of the chemistry department at the University of Kansas, and Mr. C. B. Black were teammates together on the Midland Nebraske college team back in the early days. Dector Taft pleyed fullback and C. B. Biaek played tackle. The I then talked to Charlie Black's mother and father and learned thet while Charlie was in Wisconsin on @ legislative scholarship obtained by Stuhldurer for him, the drain on the family purse was too much, so they desired Charlie to come back from Madison to Lewrence. Wow you can use your imagination the rest of the way, Dan. |
