Dear Doc:

Your letter of July 24th. was here when I returned
from our Miami,Florida meeting yesterday.

For many years Major Griffith has not selected the
officials for non-conference games in Football and Basketball
unless the school concerned made the request. Until last year
the Major has not been held responsible for the offic iating in
his conference.

Assigning officials for the non-conference games in
basketball is quite a task since the schedules are not made in
advance as they are in football. It is necessary from a psycholo-
gival view point that all assignments come from the Central office
It is not good for officials to be assigned by this office in all
instances except the non-conference games in basketball,and then
have them make out their non-conf erence schedule on their own.
As you know I am perfectly willing to have you make specific
request for these non-conference games,to gét #% many new men
in action on these games that you may see what they can do. For
the most part there has not been requests for mixed crews in
basketball between the various conferences;I feel that this may
be developed in the very near future,and will eventually make for
better and more uniform officialting in basketball.

You have seen MacDonald and Harlow in action and I
take it from your letter that @ither would be satisfactory with
you. I will write Rollie Williams today telling him that I am
assigning Parke Carroll to that game,and subject to your approval
will accept either Harlow or MacDonald.

I have completed assignments for all non-conferene
games except those of Kansas. Can you give me your non-conference
schedule to-date that I mgy get to work on that.
