March 26, 1939 Dr. F. C. Allen Athletic Dept. University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: I feel somewhat embarrassed for writing such a letter as this is to be, but when I think uhent it I guess one may be privalidged to ask a favor of an old friend. I still have the same job that I had when I was in Kansas last summer, and as far as a job is concerned I am satisfied with it. It pavs $240. a month anc the work is vigerous end healthful, but that is the absolute top and since the work is nothing more than manveal labor I feel that I am wasting my time.. AS you know I am not very lazy and I try to be a good worker, My only ambition is to get a job where I will have a cnance to get a better job. Many times I have envied "Mit" and wished that I had a job as fine as his. I am quite willing to sacrafice the difference in pay for the opportunity of advancement and outlook for the future that is between his job and mine. I would give anything in the world for a job like that. I have the coblege preparation and I have had two years of experience in the oil fields. I write to you because I feel sure that you will be good enough to advise me as to ways and means of applying for one of these jobs. To whome could I write? And will you be able to recommend me to them? I sincerely nope I am not imposing on you and I assure you that I will be a good man in any job that I may get. Charles A. Pitts PrP. O. DILL, Director og HORACE MASON, Sports Editor Sports News That saddest of all football experiences, making a long run for a touchdown and then having it nullified by the officials, was the experience of L.D. Silver, University of Kansas fullback, in the traditional Kansas-Missouri game in 1898. The Jayhawks handed the Tigers a 12-0 defeat that day, but only a technicality kept the score from being 18-0. Silver raced 80 yards on a crisscross for a touchdown, only to eee the play called back. ‘wm The student paper, the University Weekly, for November 24, 1898 had the followingto say about Silver, "Words of too high praise iKtmmmiinmm cannot be spoken for Silver who made a very brilliant run of 80 yards without interference amid deafening cheers from University friends, but was called back because the referee had not blown his whistle to put the ball in play." Besides making this spectacular play, Silver also played an important part in the two touchdowns which counted. The Jayhawk team lost only one game that year, Nebraska having a jinx on the Kansans even then. ~30= (fhe Kansas records show Silver lettering in football only that one year-1898) ae aoe ARTHUR MEBEKS, President IVAN L. COLBY, KANSAS May 29, 1939 Mr. Phog Allen University of Kansas Lewrence, Kansas Dear Mr. Allen: I am taking the liberty of directing this letter of inquiry to you as I feel you can give us the best possible advise. Our problem is ir connection with the construction of four cement tennis courts as apart of a recreational project under WPA for Colby. We can't seem to get any authoritative advise as to how far the backstops should be from the edge of the courts. The plans as now drawn allow a distance of fifteen feet, but a number of people here seem to think that the distance should be greater. It is possible thet on some occasions the courts will be used for tournament play and we want to allow the correct distance between the courts and the backstops. If you can advise me in this matter, I will be very grateful for the favor. Very truly yours, ell Ville Platte, La, July #5, 1939 Dr. F. C. Allen ; University of Kansas ' Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: This time I am writing you in the interest of a.boy named Merit. This boy played four years of football in high- school and from all the information I can hear he has a great deal of ability as a halfback. I have known this boy for two years put I did not know until just the other day that he was interested in going to college. Now I have found out that he has been working and saving his money with the sole intention of going to college. So now he has a little money saved and is ready to ZOoe Dr. Allen I have worked with this boy in a type of work which has enabled me to see him at his best and at his worst. He is tough, strong and fast, and what is better he is smarte But for all of his living and working in the oil fields, he is as well settled in his way of living as Biny Moore. , He weighs 185 pounds, > feet 8 inches tall, and ie 22 years old. He can kick and pass above average. But his best qualification, as I see it, is that he is one of the hardest workers I have seen. I have been told that he missed only two practices when he was in high school. He doesn't know that I am writing this letter and we may not be able to get him. But I have quite a bit of influence and the fact that I am going to be in Lawrence this fall I feel certain that if we can find him a job, and he is as good a handy man as I was, that will pay his living expenses I can get him up there. Of course I realise that your primary interest is in bas- ketball, but I remember the keen interest you have alwayse had in helping fine young men. I am going to write to Mike anéd Mr. Henry, but I wanted to write to you first because you are the one that will remember that I was the one who recommended Jack Vogel and Carl Weidner to Kansase Sincerely yours Od iirgl ie.
