Ville Platte, La, July #5, 1939 Dr. F. C. Allen ; University of Kansas ' Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: This time I am writing you in the interest of a.boy named Merit. This boy played four years of football in high- school and from all the information I can hear he has a great deal of ability as a halfback. I have known this boy for two years put I did not know until just the other day that he was interested in going to college. Now I have found out that he has been working and saving his money with the sole intention of going to college. So now he has a little money saved and is ready to ZOoe Dr. Allen I have worked with this boy in a type of work which has enabled me to see him at his best and at his worst. He is tough, strong and fast, and what is better he is smarte But for all of his living and working in the oil fields, he is as well settled in his way of living as Biny Moore. , He weighs 185 pounds, > feet 8 inches tall, and ie 22 years old. He can kick and pass above average. But his best qualification, as I see it, is that he is one of the hardest workers I have seen. I have been told that he missed only two practices when he was in high school. He doesn't know that I am writing this letter and we may not be able to get him. But I have quite a bit of influence and the fact that I am going to be in Lawrence this fall I feel certain that if we can find him a job, and he is as good a handy man as I was, that will pay his living expenses I can get him up there. Of course I realise that your primary interest is in bas- ketball, but I remember the keen interest you have alwayse had in helping fine young men. I am going to write to Mike anéd Mr. Henry, but I wanted to write to you first because you are the one that will remember that I was the one who recommended Jack Vogel and Carl Weidner to Kansase Sincerely yours Od iirgl ie. Orl. Charles A. Pitts
