January 24, 1942. Mre George 3B. Powers, 608 Fourth National Bank Blde., Wichita, Kansas. Dear George: Thank you very much for your letter of the 23rd instent. I appreciate your interest in the matter. dap Maskell has been umpiring this semi~pro tourna- gent there for a umber of years. If you can get around the baseball boys and get some of the inside dope I Imow that you will find out the boy is getting his expenses paid by the Boston Red Sox, because whether he is signed up or not I have heard it on good authority that he is being taken care of at Oklahoma on this basis and that Jap Haskell made the arrangements. I would like to show that Jap Haskell’s activity in the semi-pro league there as an wmpire and a scout for the Boston Red Sox carries over to such an extent that he is using his position to develop professional baseball players — rather than amateur players, and the function of the Univer~ sity is not to develop professional players. Jap Haskell has @ brother who works in the stockyards end since this controversy I am sure there has been much discussion. And since that discussion has been pretty general a keen legal mind like yours can pick up a lot of good stuff. Monk Edwards may not care to talk but I em sure there are some professors at North High that wuld give you a lot of information regarding Oklahoma's activity with these foot- ball players in taking them to Norman a couple of weeks ago. There are a lot of Oklahoma end Kansas alumi in Wichita, and I would greatly appreciate all the information that you can get regarding their subsidization and proselyting. I expect to make ir. Haskell humt cover. : _ _ Anticipating the pleasure of seeing you in Wichita on the 2nd, I em : ‘ Very sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, FCA: AH Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach.
