Physical Education Classes
Not a Haventfor Paid Athletes

Chicago, Ill, March 29 (2)—
Dr. Delbert - Oberteuffer of
Ohio State spoke out Wednes-
day against an opinion he said
was held in some academic

quarters that a college physical

educaiton department is’ “a

| ‘haven for recruited athletes.”

Dr. Oberteuffer, a professor

of physical education, made a

survey of such departments at
behest of the North Central As-
sociation of Colleges and Sec-
ondary Schools.
_ Reporting at the association’s
meeting, he said:

tion departments is lacking in
respectability and as such is a

haven of refuge for recruited
athletes.”

On the contrary, he said,
staffs of college physical edu-
cation departments “have a fine
educational viewpoint .. . and
try to do the job well. under
apparent overshadowing
cloud of the more spectacular
athletic programs.”

Dr. Oberteuffer said he talked
with physical educationists,
deans, presidents, biologists and
other scientists of 10 institutions
in the midwest, names of which.
