The Navy League of the United States * The Pioneer Organization for National Defense in the United States * FounpDED: November 20, 1902. Pursuant to the call issued by Jarvis B. Edson, Chairman of the Committee ap- pointed by the Naval Order of the United States for the formation of a “society to insure the United States against the pos- sibility of being invaded”, the Navy League of the United States was organized at the New York Yacht Club. Present at this meeting were: Jarvis B. Edson, a naval veteran of the Civil War representing the Naval Order of the United States; Washington Irving, an officer of the New York State Naval Militia, representing the Association of the Naval Militia of the United States; C. W. Rushenberger, representing the Naval Academy Alumni of Philadelphia; and J. D. J. Kelley, an editorial writer of the New York Herald, representing the Naval Academy Alumni of New York.
