A few yoars Artic Eilere told me that they were to put in the nomination of Georges Edwards, and that Professor French was chairman of the Nominating Com- mittes, but when the mtter was discussed Artie Eilers told the chairman that he had letters from the coaches of the Missouri Valley and the Big-Six Conferences and they were all uminimously for me with the exception of the University of Missourie I em very sure that the majority of the coaches have not changed either in the Missouri Valley or the Big-Sixe if you feel that that might be @ good move, I am very'sure that Henry Iba and the Missouri Valley group would be glad to do the same thing again, es did Louis Menze, Harold Browme, and the Big-Six majority groupe What do you think about this? Allen, Director, Division of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, Dear Phogs Replying to your letter of November 2, wish to say that I am writing John L. Griffith today and sendinghim copies of the correspondence I have had with Chet Brewer, I am just a little hesitant to go beyond that point because, being a public school representative rather than a collegiate representative, I feel that it would be entirely out of place for me to give the appearance of in any way attempting to influence the selection of the collegiate personnel. I feel quite certain that Saint and Ole will go the limit and am inclined to think the Major will take his cue from Saint and do all he can. Artie Eilers spoke up and told Professor French that he had letters from all the coaches - the Missouri Valley and all the coaches save one in the Big-Six as well as the Athletic Directors, saying they wanted me continued. Artie was then chair- man of the Nominating Committee, but other factors were at work and I was to be replaced by George Edwardss There is a lot of competition between Kansas and Missouri, Floyde I am sure that you can understand. I am trying to clear my desk tonight so I can answer the Dr. Keene communication at once@e I should have done this before but I have had charge of the Lawrence Community Chest Drive for the entire University and it has been a whale of a job, and then the YMA “rive and other details, besides my regular work, has kept me jumpinge You will hear from me very shortly on the matter that should have had attention a long time agoo — Mre Rowe Page Two Nove 19, 1940 Two weeks ago I attended the Northwest Ohio State Teachers Meeting in Toledo and then I went to Chicago and then to Wisconsin for a Teachers Meeting in Milwaukeee I have had plenty to dos too much in fact, Floyde Here's hoping things are breaking well with youe Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education ard Recreation Varsity Basketball Coach FOArlg THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY i Grorce W. Rigurmire, President DEPARTMENT OF PuysicaL EDUCATION L. W. St. Joun, Director COLUMBUS November 14, 1940 Mr. James W. St. Clair Southern Methodist University Dallas, Texas Dear Jim: I understand there is something brewing along the line of replacing "Phog" as the member of the Rules Committee from District 5. I, perecasiiy. would feel that it would be — & mistake to replace “Phog” at this time. I think you will agree he is a valuable member of the Rules Committee and more than that he has done a whale of a fine job in connection with our N.C.A-A. Basketball Tournament, the conduct of which is fim the lap of the N.C.A.A. Basketball Rules Committee. I have talked this matter over with Saint at some length and he tells me that the chairman of the W.C.A.A. Rules Committees has a voice which is listened to by the Appointments Committee. In other words, if you, as Chairman of our Basketball Rules Committee, feel that the reappointment of "Phog” Allen is indicated, and if you feel he should be retained, it is entirely within your province, and perhaps I might say it is your duty, to say so to the men who are charged with the nominations for committees. In this case, C. L. Brewer at Missouri is the Chair-— man of the Nominating Committee in District 5. I hope you won't feel I am being presumptuous if I suggest to you that I think it would be very much in order for you to write Brewer, telling him why you feel “Phog" should : continue on the committee. As I see it, there are two good reasons for him continuing - one is the fine job he does as a rules legislator and, secondly, because of the key position which he holds in this business of conducting a successful N.C.A.A- Tournament, and you, as Chairman of the committee charged with the conduct of that Tournament, surely have a right to speak up for the retention of a man whom you feel is important in that connection. Saint has suggested that if you do feel this way you would be doing the right thing to write Brewer and to send a | _ eopy of the letter to Professor Thomas E. French of Ohio State University, who, as you know, is the Chairman of the Nominating Committee for the N.c.AsAs Kindest regards, I am Very sincerely yours, ae. a) , a . co He @+ Olson -\icc-Dr. Forrest C.
