But we would like to have Lance. Hogue is ae eek Se, Oberhelman and Hinkhouse are nothing to talk about. I believe Browming will prove to be a good man. But frenkly, I think Pullian is the worst that I have ever seen. I think we had better talk about officiala very definitely for the Priday and Saturday night games. I would not want Tony Hinkle to think that we would run in a set of peor officials on him; therefore, I think we are justified in having Gibbs come on. ees Baer ar Sine erate. Se, Geckentend. weed: $8, veld a Hoe eg & geme for them anyhow. Hinshaw will not call a single illegal starting of the dribble. He permits them to run all over the floor. Can't you as commissioner tell him that the rules specifically state that the illegal starting of the Getbhle ghould te enforaed rigitly beeause it pubs the Warden on the guard. It makes him foul because the dribbler has started with a rum and not with a step. I believe you could change that feature, which is the worst one of his officiating. He is not bad on the other stuff although he calls a foul and walks away without designating the offender. That is weak officiating and looks as if it is designed to keep the crowd off of him. Prankly, I will go back to Ernie Quigley over these amateurs, _ 0 let's use Quig. For the Nebraska game at Ames on Jan. 18th. I originally assigned Carroll and O'Sullivan. Ted withdrew when he went into the service and I replaced him with Oberhelamn. A week ago Carroll wrote that he would be unable to make the trip. I got North to take his place. A few days later a letter came from Oberhelman saying he could not make the trip so I got “ess to take Mike's place. Eddie Hogue will work both nights. Now I need another official:for friday night. Lance is working at Lincoln saturday night and at Ames Feb.1. I doubt that he could get away fro friday night. Even if he could he would not want to work in your game with the Olathe Naval Base. I imagine that Hinshaw could work friday night if you think he is our next best bet. I have talked until I was blue in the face about the injustice to the guard to allow the offensive man to use an illegal start of the dribble. Some officials just can't distinguish this when they see it, or just won't call it. If we don't use Hinshaw our next best bet for friday night would be Brown or Ellis to work with Hogue. Peterson is out of the city of Topeka and would not be avail- able. Let me know at once your feeling in this matter. Very /sineerely yours, R. E. Peters P.S. Just to get the record straight Pullian was not nemed ove Hogue. In fact the composite assignments have not been sent out and at won't be because of the uncertain- ities of the assigments. I jusu happened to put his name first in writing you. ur. R. EB. Peters, 342 So. Chelsea, Kensas City, Mo. Dear Reaves: | Yes, I saw you across the court Saturday night but realized that you must have bean called away rather early. We are glad to have Hogue and are happy to take 8 chanee on Captain Schies2. | ft agree with you, I would not pay Roper $20.00 to go t Stillwater. Lance and Larson will have to do for the GaNe@e : : I hope you oan get Lance to work with Oberhelman on February 23. I think Peterson worked a very weak game at Olathe and a weak one here. He lets the other fellow carry all the load and doesn't add much to it. He is rather mouse- like and has a tendenay to have rabbit cars. In other words, he doesn't hold up for the visitors, as I have witnessed him at Olathe and here in Lawrence. dt ils sos nid on Heed os Wah & ek tl can't get Lance on February 23rd what about Eddie Hogue. I do not mind having fouls called on us here at home. I realize if they don't call them on us here they won't o&11 them on the | visitors at the other place, and in that point I think Peterson is weak. Hinkhouse is not too strong a man with another weak fellow. Oberhelman is much stronger. Why couldn't we get Oberhelmen with Nebraska here? i think you get what I mean. fellows like Hogue end Oberhelman are much better than fellows like Peterson or Dick Pullian. Roper wanted an extra $20.00 fo the added day it would cost him togo to Stillwater for your game wtth the Oklahoma Aggies the 17th. I think Artie will get Lance and Larson for hat game. This seems to me a very selfish attitude for the Oklahoma athletic director and business manager to take, It closes the door to the visiting teams, making their connection on the Santa Pe back for the north, The highway is patrolled from Norman to Oklehom, City and any driver who exceeds the 55 mile an hour speed limit is picked up end his gasoline rationing card is confiscated. The Office of Defense rtation insists that the railroads not hold more than the allotted 20 minutes. — Had the Oklahoma authorities been working on the theory that the cars could make the old speed before the war regulations hampered them, then it might be a justifiable situation, But to me it shows en utter disregard not only for the convenience but for the monetary expenditure to these traveling teams when they are forced to act according to these arbitrary rulings. It is utterly impossible to make the connections under the present arrangements, , If the game starts promptly at 7:45, it takes an hour and 15 min- utes as a minimum to play the game, The game should then be over by 9 o'clock, which it wasn't because the Oklahoma between-halves entere tainment ran five minutes over. While I recognize the fact that you do play Oklahoma on the 26th, I also see that you are playing them at home which does not énconvenience you any on the travel end of it... From the standpoint of the crowd, I can understand that thoroughly too. However, I do wish you would give it one more thought and put it up to whomever you think would do the most good to push the game and try to work it out so that we can still play you on the 27th. I am pressing on this a little and would like to be a little insistent from our standpoint of travel, considering also the war movements and all other things that must be trans- ported. Thanks for the kind words relative to our ball games. While I have been losing them by one, you have been winning them by one. You certainly mst have had a nice eastern trip.
