ress as possible in the ficel¢ of Health and Physical Bducation in order
that the programs anc accomplishrients of our schools may, at an carly
date, compare favorably with tho programs ami accomplisimonts of tho
schools of other stetes, <A vory important and determining factor in the
progress of tho schools of our stato in this work is the nature and
force of our initial efforts. It is very necessary that a fow definite
things be done from the very beginning. To do a few things well is far
better than to do, or attempt to do, a groat mmbor of things. For this
reason wo are urging thet the schools of this stato do cortain dcfinito
things this year with the idea that these things will be a permanent
part of a broader and richer program which may bo gradually developed
for ths future,

Probably the first and most important part of tho Hoalth and Phy-
sical Education Program is a cleer statenont of the ains and objoctives.
In other words, a clesr understanding of what is to be accomplishec with
a given progran is very essential to the proper execution of that prog-
ran. Sone of tho moro worthy objectives for which cach school might
strive are listed as follows:

1. To keep the body clean, both inside and outside.

2. To teach the pupils to cat the proper anount of wholesone

food ané to urge that they get sufficiont slecp and rest.

3, To dovelop the habit of kceping the body orect while

sitting, standing or walking

4, To provide the proper amount and kind of exercise and play.

5. To make tho school, home, and neighborhood healthier places

in which to live and learn,

6. To reduce the number of accidents in school and clsevhero.

7. To prevent the spread of corrmnicable diseases through sore

approve and recognized form of irrmnization.

8. To correct physical defects as far as possible.

9. To provide an activity suitable for oach ond overy child

in school,

10. To improve the physical capacities of each individual by de-
veloping such qualities as strength, speed, agility, alert-
ness, endurance, skill anc accuracye

11. To utilize the physical activities as an educational factor
through the devclopment and improvernent of courage, con~
centration, disciplinc, self-confidence, self-control, fair
play, and sportsmanship.

12, To further develop, through play and other physical activ-
ities, such social qualities as kindness, unselfishness,
friondliness, truthfulness, justice, honesty, courtosy,
thoughtfulness, generosity, tolerance and sociability.

The schools of the state are being asked to do tho following definito

things this year and it is expected that these things aro to be continued
from year to yoar:

1, That wherever possible every child in tho clementary as vell as
the hich school be given a thorough examination by a liccnsed
physician or murse. Where this is irpossible, an inspection
should be mde by the teacher who should report pupils with pron
inent physical defects, or who have the corrionly known syrimptoris
of some cormmnicable disoase, to the superintendent who in turn
should refer the pupil to a physician.
