Dear Dr. Allen:

With my life jumping in hectic
spasms of finishing school work, finishing packing and
socializing, I have given up trying to write each member
of the department a personal "thank you" for my perfectly
marvelous wedding gift. So, I am asking if you will see
that each of them knows that I have written you.

It's when one trys to express thanks
that he realizes how hopelessly futile language is. But
I have observed to myself several times during the last
weeks that the nicest thing about leaving is the discovery
that friends and colleagues care enough to do the nice
things they have for me. Each tribute touches me and’
never fails to evoke a humility that is deeply grateful
for the warmth that makes friends what they are.

So I want each member of the group
who remembered me with the tea service to know that this
gesture meant far more to me than a present, and now I'll
hope that I can have the pleasure of entertaining all of
you during your World's Fair visit.
