CHAIRMAN DON CARLOS PEETE, M.D. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE STUDENT COMMITTEE MR. BERNARD HALL, CHAIRMAN MR. BRUCE DOWNS THE FRANCISCO MEMORIAL MISS NEVA KENNEDY RALPH H. MAJOR,M. D. May 18, 1944. Francisco Fund Contributor: Dear Friend: In the development of any project certain problems arise that at first were not anticipated, problems that must be solved as the project progresses. It was our original plan to build a Student Union Building, costing $200,000.00 or more, as a memorial to Dr. Francisco. Our campaign has brought us approximately $10,000.00, most of which has been paid in cash. At a recent meeting of the Endowment Committee the fact was stressed that perhaps we should not dedicate a building of this magnitude to one mane It was, rather, decided to set aside part of this building as a memorial to Dre Francisco ayd to go ahead with our campaign to build a building with that thought in mind. The exast form that this Francisco Memorial will take, of course, cannot be determined until funds are available. It may be a social hall, a gymnasium, or o wing of the building. We are emphasizing the fact that there are two projects. We have been trying for five years to got a Student Unicn Building. This building will, because of its nature, never be supplied by the state. We see an opportunity to establish a memorial to Dr. Francisco in this building. Our School of Medicine has many friends, some of whom were not well acquainted with Dr. Francisco, who will help in the erection of a Student Unicn Building but who weuld not contribute to a Francisco Memorial. On the other hand, we have steady found a great many indivi- duals, you to whom this letter is being directed, whc are interested in a Francisco Memorial. We hope to attain our goal of building a Student Unicn Buildirg in which there will be a Francisec Memorial by asking for help from those whe have a specific interest in each problen. We are writing this letter at this time to clarify the situation. We want those who have contributed to the Francisco Memorial to know that their money will be spent for a memorial but we feel it will be impossible | tc raise sufficient money to erect a building cn this appeal alone. We must have help from those who are anxious to see a Student Union Building on our campus but are not as much interested in the Francisco Memorial. A new impetus has been given to the project by a group of individuals whc have agreed to give a total of $500.00 during the next three years to the project. These pledges are being given with the understanding that at least forty must agree to give this amcunt also. If you have the vision of a greater Kansas University Schcol of Medicine, ond if ycu have sufficient interest in the comfort and happiness of cur medical students to help on this committee of forty, ycur pledge will be greatly appreciated. It is rather a departure from the old liquid anti-~ septic used in so many shower rooms because the feet should be dried first before the individual steps into the box. ‘This insures a dryness between the toes, which te move tensfieial tian neisture where athlete's fest develops. Secretary % June 3, 1944. Dear Jane and Hoots: I imagine you thought when you received the second note regarding Ann Horton that Pappy had gone Goofy. Well, perhaps he had. But somewhere in the back of my mind, in the busy night riding that I have been doing after commencement dates, I was a little Phoggie regarding that first note that Mother took to you. When I went to western Kansas (liays) I was not able to get a pull- mn so sat up all night. Coming back the train was late, and after the Jeters had entertained me until about train time I caught a one otclock train out of Hays (no pullman) and the chair cars were so congested with boys coming from Bougainville that it was not possible | to put your grip any place but on the floor and you had to move it about every three mimites because there were over a hundred boys in the aisles and the seats were dripping with humanity. I stood up until we got to Salina at four otclook then the U. P. put on some more cars and I got a seat and dozed until we. got into Lawrence at 6:55. Then of course the day's work was to do and the next night there was commencement or some speaking date, so I felt.” rather hazy regarding some of my correspondence thet I did in long hand now and then. Of course I can keep track of the letters that I dictate here at the offizc, but for the personalizing of our loved ones we like to write notes in long hand, but I don't get much of that - done. ‘ I had a speaking engagement at Salina, Kansas, on June 6, but yester- day they called and cancellad it, and was I happy. I am practically through now with most of my speaking dates and feel a great relief. “~r and Eleanor went with me to Slater, Missouri, we drove % night and got in about 2:30. It has been that way on al- most all of the automobile trips. t @ short note to let you know that I did recall the first note after I had mailed the second one. Hope you are all well and happy. And of course we must include Stormy because Mother tells me that he is one of the prize possessions of the Mons household. I also read your letter about the friend of yours that shot himself. I was so sorry to learn of the unhappy incident. With love, Affectionately, TO AGL OSTEOPATHIC PHYSICIANS dune 1, 1944. STATE OF KANSAS.
