Hovember 15, 1941 Mr. Bob Alien Room 44 Morris Hall University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, Pa. Dear Bob, I have written Roland Legan asking him if he has sent the tickets on to you for the Army-Havy geme on the 29th. If you do not . receive them in the next few days it might be a good idea to drop Roland a friendly note telling him that you are appreciative of his kindness in getting them for you and esking him when you might receive theme : This is the morning of the.Aggie game and eve 4s dashing madly about, and some have hopes of a victory. I am @fraid, . Zelsnack and some of the other Aggie huskies will pr powerful for them. It should be a good game. Dr. Peete and his family are coming down and are going to the game with us. csvset pe Sam You will pardon this short epistle, but I wanted to be sure of the tickets for you. | Our school does not dismiss here until the 26th. I am to speak at Cape Girardeau, Mo. at a banquet that night so I will leave after my 10:30 olass and drive to Cape Girardeau. I could catch the train out that night at St. Louis and get to Philadelphia in tine for the game, but I would have no chance to visit with Jane in Chicago and I think it better for me to save my money and wait until such a time thet I can heve more of a chance to visit with you. Mother may not go although she has nothing to tie her down as I dow If she does'nt , come you can plan on selling the two tickets to some of the boys who might want to see the game and if she does come, then you can seal the one. I want, of course, that you and Eleanor should see the Arny- Navy game because it is a great spectacle. A world's champion prise- fight, the Army-Navy game, the World's Series and the Kentucky Derby are things a fellow should see once in a lifetime if he is lucky. With love and best wishes I am Affectionately Your Dad Hovenber 25, 1961 Miss Eleanor Allen ee Sergeant Hall University of Pennsylvania ‘Dear Tuck, : lav ast I have just written to Roland Logan and have asked him about the tickets for the Army-Navy game that he has promised to procure for you and Bob. I didn't went either of you to miss this great contest and I felt that I should make all effort to see that they (the tickets) arrived safely in Philadelphia. - I have decided that it will be umwise for me to try to make the trip to Philadelphia on the 29th as I have so many things here to attend to. I am to speak at Cape Girardeau, Mo. on the 26th - the dey that our school is dismissed for Thanksgiving vacation and then I have my basketball practise etc. I would not have time to visit with Jane in Chicago if I made the trip, so I feel that it would pay me to save my money and come to see you at another time when I could have @ longer time to visit around. | 7 . I am hoping that Mother will come although I do not, but she may ‘note She has nothing to keep her in Lewrence as I do and I can manage very well alone. , I have written Bob and asked him to write to Roland and inguire about the: tickets and have told him that if Mother does not: come @1 the two extra tickets. If she does come then he can I want you and Bob to have a good time at the game. It is something that you will alweys remember and I em anxious for you to see it. I am sorry that I have no more time to write, but this is the day of the Kansas State game and people are coming in to see me every few minutes to visit. With love and best wishes I am i Affectionately, ; “eo ‘Your Dad October 31, 1941 Mr. Robert Earl Alien Room 44 a ‘ Morris Hell University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, Pa. Dear Bobby, I have just sent Roland Logan a check for $17.81, the same to take care of four tickets for the Army-Navy game. The $4.40 is the price of the tickets and 2l¢ is for the registered letter in which the tickets are enclosed. I've asked that they be sent to you at your Philadelphia address. These tickets are for you and Eleanor and for Mother and me, if I can make it. If either of us cannot make it, then you no doubt will have no difficulty in selling the ticket for the face value or even make 50¢ or $1.00 on the same if something should come up so that we | could not come up. Roland Logan says that the ticket alottment will be made in about a week or 10 days, so in about two weeks from now if you do not hear from Rolend you write to hin. $s) 4g Head Trainer at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, because I want you and Eleanor to see the game and of course I want to see it with you, Eleanor, and Mother if I can. But I've spent the good money so I want you and Eleanor to have a good time. We have school here before our game with Missouri November 26. Mother could go carlics and visit Jane and then run up end visit with you and Eleanor before the game. She cannot see why I cannot leave and go up early, but I have a 9:50 class on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridey in Theory and Practise of Athletic “raining -- a three-hour course and it's a solid. Then I have a two-hour course in Varsity Basketball at the same time on Tuesday and Thursday. Then I have ny basketball. This along with ny administrative work, and a speaking engagement at Minneapolis, Kans. on November 19 ties me up pretty completely. It might be well for you to write Mother suggesting that she come for a visit, but I do not know whether she will do it or not. there's nothing to detain her $f,ebe yeRtE SasEaty at the present responsibility of home ties @o2= time. I can get along very nicely éid Mether would enjoy her visit with you and Eleanor. She always does. You and Eleanor _ the attraction together with Jane's new home should make her visit a very pleasant one. I*ve just received a letter from Mr. Fred W. Leuhring, Assistant to the Dean of the Department of Physical Education at the University of Pennsylvania. I'm enclosing the letter for your perusal, and after you've finished it, won't you kindly mail it beck to me so that I may answer it. The letter is self-explanatory. I'd like for you to meet him so that you will have an opportunity to meet Lon Jourdet and the other coaches of basketball. When you meet them, give them my kindest regards. Mr. Leuhring was Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska years ago when I was Director here. He then went to Minnesota as Director of Athletics there and then took his Phe D. at H.¥.U. and now is at Penn. You will enjoy Here is something that will make conversation for you and your Ma... Sigma Nu brothers. On our Coymunity Chest drive here which I headed for the University I had Prof. D.H. Spencer, professor of pharmacy, as one of my workers. At luncheon down town your name was mentioned and he told me that he was one of the charter members of the Pennsyl- vania chepter of Nu Sigma Nu. He studied medicine and something came up that caused him to change over to pharmacy. You would remember him i'm sure, because he lives down at 10th and Mississippi on the east side. I've taken him home from school and have picked him up going. He’s a fine, pleasant grey-haired Christian gentleman. I've always enjoyed knowing him and I told him that I was going to.write you so that you could tell the brothers that one of the brothers is living here in Lawrence teaching in the School of Pharmacy. He was so happy thet you had gone Nu Sigma Nu. I wish that I might write you a longer letter, Bob, but my desk is full of work so I must get on the job and I wish that I were as happy doing it as I am when I am writing to you and Eleanor. I'11 not get a chance to write her so I suggest that you pass this letter on to her and give her ny love and at the same time retain a bountiful share for you. Why would it not be a good idea for me to get you some glyco-elixer? I*d be glad to do it and I know it will build you up and keep you from the flu. I still take it and am feeling splendidly. In addition to the many duties that I have on the outside I find myself to be the Program Chairman of the Lewrence Rotary Club. Monday we have Recognition and Appreciation Day of Rotary end Rotarians. We're taking this opportunity to dedicate the entire program to Dr. A.J» Anderson. He doesn't know it, but we've composed the song, "There's A Dector in Our Club” to the tune of “There's a Tavern in the Town". I'm sending it along to you so that you can get the swing of it. We've had 100 copies mimeographed and will sing it at the close of this noon-day banquet. I'm also sending you a list of the years of service that Decter Anderson gave to the people of Lawrence. I padded the Team Physician and the Oread High School Physical Examinations three years apiece to make 299 years. We're having I.J. Mead then stand and tell some tall lie in connection with ite-harmless, of course, designed to make Dr. Andorson and everybody laugh. Then Frank Banks will get up and say that he looked through the Court House records and found another year of long-time extended service and that one year -Se makes a grand total of 500 years. Then we'll have Rev. Aszman, Robert McNair De¥is, Rob a and Walt Varnum tell lies . W.W. Davis is listed as the tal. liar, Ted Asgman is called the most awful and most prolific liar, and Robert Rankin is the most gentlemanly liar. All these stories will have bearing on Doctor Anderson's early practise. Of course, he knows nothing of this plan’ nor do the other menm- bers of Rotary except the ones who are taking part in it. I know it will be pleasing to him in his later years. He has. had carcinoma of the neck for two years and has been fighting it with ultra-violet ray. I think it would be a fine thing if you and Eleanor could drop him ea note after you've read this in some of the papers that Mother sends you and congratulate him on the fine years of long service that he’s given to his fellows and his come munity. Don't let him kmow that I mentioned it, but say that you ‘read about it in the paper. The meeting will be Monday noon, Nov. 5 at the Eldridge Hotel at 12:20, and of course, you will not mention to him the malady that I spoke of. He's coming along fine, with the radium treatment and we're hoping that he will come out all right, but at his age anything might happen. The weather has been very warm here with rain most of the days8e But someti:e early in the afternoon the rain turned into snow and Mother Goose is really shaking her feather beds. Big flakes have been swirling through the air and while the grass is white, most of the snow is melting on the sidewalks and streets and it's @ damu~p-cold-day. | Ree ert From your last letter I presume that you are now wearing the shoes. Mother was worried and afraid that they had gone astray. I realize how busy you are and do not expect letters as often as Mother desires them, but I'1]1 take mine in rain checks and when you get home we'll have some good long visits. I do believe you need some GlycoeElixer so you answer and tell me if you'll take it if you get ite I can get it wholesale and have it delivered to you in Pennsyl- vania in a short time I'm sure.
