Scorebook ee renciis Se Substitution slips General: The Official Scorer is to be a member of the athletic depart- ment of the host institution. The scorer for the visiting team is to be seated between the Official timer and the official scorer. Before the Game: 1. Provide opportunity for coaches to submit line-up at least two minutes before game time. 2e Do not permit changes in the line-up until after a play has ensucd unless there is an injury or another emergency. Oe Report to the Referee if the ling-up is not submitted on time. 4. AS play is about to start check the five players who appear to be ready to start and their numbers with the line-up in your book. Oo. Notify Referge if there is any discrepancy. It is not necessary for you to wait until he has tossed the ball. Before the Second Half: Check starting players with your line-up and report to the Official if any new player is starting without having reported to yous Communication with Officials: Notify Nearest Official: 1) When a team has had five charged time-outs during regular playing time. a) One additional time-out may be granted each team for each over time period of a tie game. 2) Immediately when a plaver is charged with his fourth per- sonal foul. 3) AS soon as the ball is dead in cass there is a dispute about the score or in case there is doubt about an Official's decision, 4) As soon as ball is dead or in control of offending team in case a player is discovered who has not reported to the proper officials or who has changed his number without reporting it. The Official will indicate the number of free throws which are to be tried by standing at the free throw line with the proper number of fingers held up. The number indicates how many free throws remain. He will indicate a personal foul by holding his hand above his head as specified in the rules. He will indicate the number of the plaver who fouled by some system which he should explain to you before the game starts, Scoring Technique: Become familiar with the technique outlined in the scorebook you are using. You should observe the following: FUNDAMENTALS : Use: P for personal foul. xX in loop of P when two free throws are awarded, T for technical fouls. 2 for each TielG goal. O for a missed free throw and 1 for a successful free throw. Have running score available at all times. List the number of charged time-outs for each team. Making Substitutions: When a substitute reports, signal as soon as the ball is deade Allow substitute to go on court only when the Official has signalled by motion of his hand or hands. Do not sienal after a free thrower has started his throw. In the case of multiple throw or throw for a double foul, a sub- stitution may be made between throws, If the thrower is to be ré- placed, be sure that it is permissible for another player to at- tempt that particular throw. The Scorer is not to recognize a substitute unless the sub- stitute is ready to enter the game for immediate competition. Questions: May the Scorer signal for a substitution when the ball is in possession of the Substitute's team but not dead? Answer: No. May he signal after a successful goal before the opponent throws the ball in? Answer: Yes. Should Scorer sound his horn if a substitution is made during a period when time is out? Answer: Yes. Miscellancous: Do not take chances by guessing at the Official'ts decision. If there is doubt relative to data which must appear in your book consult the nearest Official as soon as the ball is dead. In order to avoid mistakes it is mandatory for the Official to designate the player who has committed the foul by having the player turn his back to the Scorer's table so that his number may be seen. Dr. F. ©. Allen, Head, Dept. of Physical Education, 105 Robinson Gymnasium. Dear Phog: Enroute to Washington last Sunday, I picked up a copy of the Columbus, Ohio, paper on the train and noticed your name staring at me in bold face type from the front page of the sports section. I thought that you might be interested in seeing that your name gains some circulation even in the larger towns in which the Big Ten schools are located. Congratulations on the outcome of the game with Loyola last night; also the splendid defense of Phog Allen and the K. U. team which appeared on the sports page of The Times this moming. From the experience of previous years, all of us realize that the results of these pre-season games have little bearing on the kind of basketball which the team will play during the season. As a matter of fact, experience would indicate that you will have a winner before the season is very far advanced. Congratulations and best wishes! Cordially yours, outdo Sh ghar — Director. Chet Benefiel, Tulsa University, Tulsa, Okla, Dee Erickson, Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas, ss February 20, 1941 To All Big-Six Coaches: I understand that the Big-Six Athletic Directors will meet on Uarch 1 at the Big-Six Indoor Track Meet and thet one of the subjects that they are to discuss regards the scouting of basketbel1l cames. Nothing has been said to me about the matter, but I believe that Big-Six Coaches should take it up with their Athletie Directors and present the legitimacy of scouting basketball games the same as the legitimacy of scouting football gemes. | Of course, scovting can be overdone in basket- ball as in football. But since scouting is done on a big scale in the Big-Ten perhaps it might be well to agree to some sort of a scouting schedule for the Sige Sixs Perhaps it might be well to agree to sone sort of a scouting schedule, but since nothing has >een said to the Coaches, it might be up to the Coaches to protect themselves by contacting the directors. While this is being done would it not be fair and equitable to protest the discrimination that is now practiced by the Big-Six in limiting the number of players on visiting and homé-team rosters? Certeinly no other sport is diseririnated acainst as is basketball, and it is unfair and certainly not in keeping with the professed public utterances of the conferences in regard to the befense Program of the U, S. A. If we as coaches remain supine and inherent, then we have no one else to thank but ourselves. 7 Would it not be the proper thing to have Mr. Nenze, our secretary, take it up with George Veenker, secretary of the directors, and present ovr case? Certainly we have one. Sincerely yours, FCA:lg:mln Director of Physical Education end Keereation Varsity Basketball Coach To Basketball Coaches: At A noeting of the Directors of enesene of the Big Six Gonference rday, March 1, I was assigned the job of selecting the basket- ais. The assigning ef officials for basketball will be handled in the same manner as the football assignments. Detailed in- formation conterning the manner in which this is te be done will be presented at pA igen meeting here on March 22, Here are some suggestions that you might be thinking about between now and March 22, You will be asked to make out a preferential list of at least ten officials and in the order of your preference. We will decide at the meeting the limit to this list. Officials are to appointed by this office for all games. Assignments will be made as soon after your meeting here on March 22 as possible, When your preferential list ie made, you will have the privilege of listing any exceptions you care to make at the bottom of the list. It wou a be be much easier if officials on your list were to be available on all courts; at least we can work towardg this idea. Re ess of any plan that may be use|for the selection of officials this “thauans mat be always kept in mind, namely, that coaches are to — be given the officials they want. It is a part of our - to improve these officials whereever possible, Selections will be made from the top of your list whenever POsAibles....... Be ready to decide, as a group, on a limited list of officials; it will be necessary for two or more coaches to on an official for” that official to” to get on the list. Some plan will be made whereby new officials ma be oo in your non-conference games that we may have an opportunity to judge the ability of new men, This: ean be done be- tween this office and the individual schools. as Will you have as much of your. non-conference schedule ecmnhili by the time of the meeting as possible.
