I am still living in that house << I concur in Edgar Guest's feel- ing that "it takes a heap of livin’ in a house to make it hone". Across these many years there have been times of high exaltation mixed with the vicissitudes of life. Sure, we got licked emphatically by Indiana, but those Hoosiers are an older state than we arse Knute Rockne told me once that the boys up there were rough. They played football without headgear, and at a football game where strenuous sorimmge would ensue the boys would literally grind each other's heads in the sane. After the game they would walk around and viek =p leose ears, and say, "Who%$-cars? Who®s-ears?" So we weren't rugged enough for the Heosiers. But we are thankful for all the friends we have, and when I say friends I want you to Imow how deeply we appreciate your spirit of giving by the token of friendship and affection you have showm in giving me this wonderful set of golf clubs with its manifold equipment. wn SF J a Dear 2 three Someone said there are fm stages in the American life - the passing of the Indian, the passing of the buffalo, the passing of the buck, = and now we are coming to the fourth stage where the Kansas Relays come in and the passing of the baton. But over agsinst all ef these is the thought - the passing to me by you of this lovely set of golf equipment, which makes me feel that the fifth stage in my life will prove to be the happiest one. If eis have consulted me on this gift, which they did not, I would have chosen five to one the golf clubs over any other token of esteem and friendship. If you will be generous enough to contact the proper county official in this regard and forward me the necessary credentials I will have them notarized here in our office. The delay caused by continued correspondence between you and me might prove the difference between success and failure in providing my office with this requirement in the alloted time. The three or four days so egpended may prove of cardinal importance. In my limited experience in dealing with local governmental agencies I have learned that the time element is of little consequence to them. I am sorry that your stay in Ellinwood was so brief that we were able to visit for such a short time, however, we were immeasurably flattered by the realization that you declined more elaborate quarters in ar favor.
