My dear Dr. Allens

This will acknowledge receipt of your letter of
the 20th, together with the letter from Dr.
Lindley. I am returning Dr. Lindley's letter to
you.

It was impossible to get the Finance Committee
together before the Board Meeting to give con-
sideration to your request. However, Professor
Davis and I did have an opportunity to discuss
the matter with Chancellor Malott before the
meeting and no doubt Professor Davis has seen
you since this meeting and Chancellor Malott is
also to talk to you concerning the matter.

May I assure you that there is only the kindest
feeling for you among the members of the Board
with whom we talked, but those with whom we
talked seemed to be of the opinion that it was
an inopportune time to bring the matter before
the Board as a whole without a recommendation
from the Finance Committee.
