Dear Mr. Shutz: I am writing you regarding the Hercules and the Ordnance Company contribution at DeSoto. The Kansas City, Missouri, contribution of Hercules, according to Mr. J. Me Ferren, is $489.00, There is a $10. contribution from Jackson County, Tne » Missouri, which makes a total of $499.00. There is a small amount from the Ordmance group. The amount is undetermined. Miss Eleanor Cavert, secretary to Captain Waterhouse, has this amount in her possession and will turn it over to you upon re- quest. Soon after our drive started March lst I talked with Miss Cavert and she stated that she would contact these construction people, Lozier, Broderick and Gordon, and the Area Engineers. I asked that she . call me back, which she stated that she would de. Apparently failing to get me at my office here at the University, she called the Red Cross office at the Community Building telling them that the construction - people, L.B. and G., did not want a solicitation mde. She stated the same situation was true for the Area Engineers. The Red Cross office called Mr. Wade Pierse, the president of the Douglas County chapter. Doubtless Mre Pierce did not get the idea that this information was to be directed to me, and I never heard from Miss Cavert directly or indirectly. Had I received this message from Miss Cavert I would have immediately taken steps to contact these tw organizations at DeSoto who apparently did not want to be bothered. I expect to have a conference with Mr. Dolph Simons, who is in Ottawa today. Mr. Simons and Mr. Pierce and I will have a meeting as to what steps to take in regard to giving everybody in those organizations an opportunity to contribute to their respective counties in which they reside. Only by this fine cooperation on the part of the workers and the generosity of the givers was Douglas County able to _make such a splendid showing. Mr. Stanley Schwehn, Manager, Commonwealth Theatres, Ino., Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Stanley: Qn behalf of the Douglas County Red Cross War Fund drive, I want to thank you sincerely for your corporation's generosity in giving us rent free the fine office space in the Jayhawker Theatre bufilding, which you generously donated for our Red Cross drive. " I also want you to imow that we appreciate your many personal acts of kindly cooperation to the Red Cross. The fact that your theatres are putting on 4 oollestion for one week will | ve a very definite monetary help to ow local chapter as well. When our budget was made last October our local chapter sould not foresee the tremendous drain that would have to be met on the home service and hospital nursing. The expenditures have been three times what was estimated, Therefore, the contributions that are made at the theatres will help materially in permitting these fine Red Cross services to function to their fullest ad- vantage here in Lawrence and Douglas County. : We would like for you to express to the Commonwealth Theaters, Inc., officers and directors our gratitude, and we appreciate your personal gooperation. ‘Very cordially yours, Chairman, Douglas County Red Cross ' War Fund Drive, 1944. August 19, 1943 Miss Trene Brockett Administrative Assistant: Chapter Service American Red Cross 1709 Washington Ave, St. Louis, Mo. My dear Miss Brockett: We wish to report our experience in our War Fund Campaign as per your suggested schedule as follows: 1. We prefer that billboard poster service continue to be handled by the central office. We feel, however, that perhaps they should be put up 2& week or ten days earlier than they were in our community. e. The labor in our community is organized to a very small] degree and, as a result, we had only one contribution from one.labor union, and that in the amount of $15.00. 3. We feel that the audience collection in motion picture: theaters was very satisfactory in Lawrence, Our local Salvation Army furnished voung people to pass the collection plate, The amount collected was $833.95 which we consider very good inasmuch as our collection drive had been concluded and gone over its quota several days before the theater collection. 4, The National Corporations represented in Lawrence are confined mainly to chain food, clothing and notions stores, Their response was good as it always is in any drive in this community. 5, .We did not ask for nor receive pledges and, conse- quently, received all donations at that time in cash, 6. Our total expense in conducting the campaign was $138.13. Our total receipts were $26,044.39 making our percent of expense .00535, 7, We wish to compliment the central office en the type of supplies and their fine cooperation in sending supplies of which we ran short. Receipt cards was the only shortage we experienced and perhaps that was due to the fact that we attempted to complete the campaign in 10 days rather than 30. + THE AMERICAN RED CROSS DOUGLAS COUNTY CHAPTER COMMUNITY BUILDING LAWRENCE, KANSAS We broke our solicitations down into the following divisions: : 1. Advance & Special Gifts : $4653.00 This group comprised gifts from larger firms and was conducted one week previous to the start of the regular campaign. 2. Clubs & Lodges $1029.30 This solicitation was likewise started one week in advance of the regular campaign and was con- ducted largely through letters sent out by a - golicitation committee. The local Elks Lodge gave $500.00 which we used as “kick-off" publicity for our campaign. * 3. Tawrence Business District. $2637.70 Comprised of contributions from small business firms and downtown employees. : It was a smaller amount than we expected but was due to the wonderful coverage of our residential solicitation committee, 4, fJawrence Residential District : $5644, 30 Mis we consider our banner division. It was headed bv Mrs. Deal Six, a wonderful organizer, 5, Schools & Teachers _ & 737,14 This includes Haskell Institute, an Indian school located here, ; 6, Kansas University $3354.08 We set this up as a separate division because of the size of the institution. This division was headed by Dr. Forrest C, Allen, famous basketball coach. We feel that he did a tremendously good job. 7. Douglas County Rural Area | $2785.04 This consists of donations strictly from farmers and was broken down by school districts with the solicitation centered in the rural teachers and school boerds, + THE AMERICAN RED CROSS DOUGLAS COUNTY CHAPTER COMMUNITY BUILDING LAWRENCE, KANSAS 8, County towns other than TLawrence Baldwin $1159.66 Eudora 847,12 Lecompton 133,35 Organizations were set up in each town and functioned excellently. We were disappointed in the result at Eudora where there were hundreds of defense workers living in trailers, The re- sponse from these people was very poor and they were al] called upon for donations. 9. Sunflower Ordnance Works $2229.75 Solicitation was made in cooperation with Johnson Countv at the Sunflower Ordnance Works which is 12 miles distant from Lawrence, This was made after our regular campaign had been concluded, It was conducted bv women from Tawrence and Johnson County who sat all dev in small booths over the immense erea of this plant and received donations as 2 result of Red Cross signs on the booth. I want to pay special tribute to these housewives who were subjected to the worst winter weather that Kansas offers in soliciting these funds, The total was $6723.90 . which was allocated to 9 counties, our proportion being the above amount. The people of Lawrence and Douglas County not only gave generously enough to far exceed our guota but willingly gave of their time to help in the campaign. It is a privilege to live in such ® community. M. S. Winter Chairman War Pund Camnaign ‘ Our blood, a pint -- scientifically drawn while we comfortably lie on & nurse's cot - on us little. Our boys at the battle fronts whose life blood is savagely spilt -- costs them much more, or per- haps all. The Red Cross at his side while fighting constantly and heroically on every front and on the seven seas, wants your money. We gave most generously last fall to the Community Chest and War Fund drive for those in Army camps, USO and so forth. Buying a bond is no sacrifice. We have loaned our money to our government. Now let's give, actually give, a small portion of what we actually owe to our boys who critically need the Red Cross humane service. March 9, 1944. Professor E. C. Buehler, Chairman, KU.
