JC 7825 St. Charles Avenue New Orleans, Louisiana June 23, 1943 Dear DR. Allen; Since I've last seen you I have traveled over a good part of the United States and I am now living in New Orleans. my family is with me which includes my wife Madeline, and young boy, Larry John age 14 months. | Within the last few days I have made an application | to the U.S. Navy for an appointment as an officer in this service, I gave passed my physical examination and am now in the process of completing the final papers. I am required to furnish three recommendations from persons who are in a position to testify as to my character, reputation, and mental and professional quali- fications. I should like to have a recommendation from you addressed to the Office of Naval Officer Procurement, 217-227 Camp Street, New Orleans, Louisiana. However, Please mail the letter to me as I am requited to submit the letter with my other application papers. I don't know whether you are familiar with my work since leaving school except in a general way but anything that you may have to say will be greatly appreciated. Since leaving school in 1932 I worked in a mine in Arizona for one year. From 1933 to 1937 I mined gold ore in Boulder, Colorado. From January 1938, to July 1939, I examined mines and worked as a mine foreman in the Philippines. July 1939 to January 1942, I worked for the Philippine Engineering Corporation of Manila, Philippines as a sales engineer and had some admin- istrative responsibilities in connection with the marketing ef industrial supplies. I might add that I returned to the states about June 1, for the same firm on a six months business trip and was prevented from returning to the Philippines by the war. Therefore in January of 1942 I went to work for the Quigley Company of New York as a sales engineer in their Southern terri- tory. The Quigley Company manufacture fire brick and other refractory material for industrial furnaces. June 1, I resigned this position to work for Higgins Aircraft Company a defense industry in New Orleans as a loftsman in the production depart- mente This brings my emplovment record up to date and is reviewed for your reference purpose, Recently I was in New York and quite by chance ran into Fergus McKeever whom I had'nt seen since about 1932. He mentioned the pleasure of seeing you and Mrs. Allen on the - eccasions of your visits to New Yorke Please remember me to Mrs. Allen and Mit. : | Sincerely, | In REPLY ADDRESS NOT THE SIGNER OF THIS LETTER, BUT DIRECTOR OF NAVAL‘OFFICER PROCUREMENT, NEW s ORLEANS, LA. XN (i fee 4 1020 S.W. 23rdAve/ Miami 35 Florida Dear Docs You are no doubt surprised to hear from me so soon but I have a very special reason in writing. Some time ago I mentioned that I might apply for a commission in the Navy and now that time has arrived. Our names were suggested to the Personnel Officer by our Athletic Officer. There are four of us. My application after the necessary documents are accumulated will be given to the personnel officer who in turn will present them to the Commanding Officer. The Commanding Officer will weigh the information he has and then forward it to the Bureau of Personnel in Washington if he sees fit. From all the dope I can get all four of us have a good chance of coming out in good shape. I would certainly appreciate it to no ends if you would write a letter of reccommendation for me stressing my ability to handle men and that I served as freshman football and basketball coach at the University of Kansas. I think that this will mean a lot as the Commanding Officer is athletically inclined. Any good word that you can state in my behalf will do a lot of good. The letter should be written to the Commanding Officer, United States Naval Air Station, Richmond, Florida but be sure and mail it to me at the above address because it will have to go to the personnel officer first. Whatever the outcome is I will be sure and let you know the results. Will you do this for me at your earliest convenience? Day before yesterday I ran into George Clucas who was a broad jumper at K.U. He is a teacher and an ensign in the Coast Guard. He is an inst:ructor in the Subchaser Training Center in Miami. George Stapleton thinks he is going to be transferred to Ammarillo, Texas or Lincoln, Nebraska. Will close hoping to hear from you very soon. jee: ad Lagi i red Harris
