Dr. Forrest C+ Allen

One of the outstanding figures in the history of basketball,
Dr. Forrest C. (Phog) Allen of the University of Kansas, begins his
fourth decade as a coach this winter. The dean of American basketball
coaches! record shows 23 conference championships in 30 years of coach-
ing. Brilliant coach, author, organizer and researchist, Dr. Allen
has done much for the game of basketball.

Forrest Clare Allen was born at Jamesport, Mo., Nov. 18, 1885.
He played basketball when the game was in its infancy, competing on the
Independence, Mo. high school team. It was there that he first met Dr.
Hames Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, who was coach at
K.U. at that time.

In 1904 Forrest Allen entered the University of Kansas. During
his college career, he lettered in basketball in 1905, 1906 and 1907,
and in baseball in 1906 and 1907.

The following year, 1908, saw Allen off on the start of his
coaching career, with a championship basketball team at K.U. The next
year he turned out another title winner on Mount Oread. That same season
Dr. Allen also was coaching the Haskell Indian team which won 19 of 24
games and the cage team of Baker University, twenty miles away.

This concluded Allen's coaching efforts for three years,
while he pursued the study of medicine. In 1912 he became coach of all
sports at Missouri State Teachers College at Warrensburg and his ser-
vice as a coach has been continuous from that date.

At Warrensburg Allen coached a winner every year for seven
years in basketball. The Mules won seven cage titles under his tutelage
and the football team also enjoyed considerable success.

In the fall of 1919 he became director of athletics at the
University of Kansas, and before the basketball season was over was
coaching that sport. In a short time he had put the Jayhawks back up
in the championship bracket, a spot which they have been at or near
ever since. In one stretch, from 1922 through 1927, Kansas basketball
teams won six straight championships.

Last winter a Jayhawk quintet added another bright page to
K.U. basketball history by fighting its way to the finals of the Nation-
al Collegiate tournament. There, a "hot" Indiana team trounced Kansas.

Dr. Allen has been prominent in the progress made by the game.
He was one of the founders of the National Basketball Coaches Associat-
ion and is a past president of that organization. For many years he has
been a member of the National Basketball Rules Body.

As a member of this latter organization the Kansas coach has
done extensive research in trying out proposed changes in the rules. He
was one of the backers of the new streamlined backboards and gave a
thorough trial to the Bask-0O-Lite goals. For many years he has sponsored
the proposal of 12 foot goals to offset the height of young giants.

- Primarily through Allen's efforts basketball found a place on
the program of the Olympic games in 1936. Previously he had endeavored
to get basketball in the 1932 Olympics, but failing there had kept
working until the game was included for the first time at Berlin.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tourne
ament also was an Allen project. He spent a great deal of time working
on the organization of this "world series" of basketball.

book "Better Basketball", a 490 page volume of "technique, tactics and

Young at 55, the handsome and debonair Jayhawk coach, never
knows an idle moment. His main job at the University is that of director
of the department of physical education. The number of students enroll-
ing in the four year major in this department has been increasing every
year since the major was instituted in 1937.

: Notwithstanding a lengthy class schedule in addition to his
administrative duties, Coach Allen suits up for practice regularly. Most
any afternoon he can be found in his warmup suit on the court demon-
strating the things he wants done.

1940-41 Kansas Prospects

An extensive rebuilding job confronts Dr. F.C. Allen as he
begins the 1940-41 campaign. Gone are four of the seven men who carried
Kansas to the finals of the National Collegiate tournament. Those seven
men played the majority of the time last year, the other four men who
lettered seeing but little service.

From the starting lineup which faced Indiana in the game for
the national championship last March only two men, Bob Allen, center,
and Howard Engleman, forward, return. Replacing four men of the caliber
Of Don Ebling, Ralph Miller, Dick Harp and Bruce Voran is a monumental
project. Miller was second high scorer in the conference last year.
| Juniors and seniors are available to fill the gaps, but out-
side of guard John Kline they are men who have not played much. Working
in the starting lineup at the start of the season with Allen, Engleman
and Kline were forward Bill Hogben and guard Bob Johnson. Hogben played
‘only one semester as a sophomore and saw little enough action last year
that he failed to score a single point in conference games.

Johnson is a junior who has been shifted to guard after play-
ing only a fair amount at forward as a sophomore. He has been looking
good, but in case Johnson does not win a first string berth, it prob-
ably will go to one of several new men. Engleman is the lone real high
scorer among the veterans and he has been a slow starter the past two
years. Not until around the middie of the season does the former Ark
City high school star get going at full speed. Bob

Piloting the team for the third year will be/Allen, a remark-
able ball handler and passer. Allen-coached teams have the center as a
"quarterback" to run the quintet on offense and it would be hard to
find a better man for this job than the youngest son of the K.U. coach.

Best of the new men this year are John Buescher and Vance
Hall, forwards, and Marvin Sollenberger and Norman Sanneman, guards.
Buescher and Sollenberger are the most prominent contenders for a first
string berth as the season opens.

: Other members of the wquad likely to see action this year
include T.P. Hunter, letterman forward, and two squadmen from last
season, Charlie Walker and Jim Arnold, both forwards.

Biggest problems the team faces are the dearth of experience
and the lack of height. The few tall men on the squad have shown a lack
of natural ability.

ALLEN, ROBERT- center- 21 -home, Lawrence; graduate of Lawrence high
school, 1937; coached by Edd Wood. Now in his third year as a regular
on the Kansas basketball team. Plays the "quarterback" or ball handling
position, and also can play guard or forward if desired. Youngest son
of Coach Forrest C. Allen. Has been playing basketball ever since he
was big enough to lift a ball. Wonderful ball handler and good shot.
Good enough on defense to make a good guard. Made the all-tournament
team at the N.C.A.A. tournament last year. Studying to be a doctor.

ARNOLD, JAMES- forward- 21 -home, downs; graduate of Downs high school,
1937; coached by Paul Starbuck. Outstanding player at the Class B state
high school tournament his senior year. Rangy boy who did not compete
his sophomore year, concentrating on his studies. Played last year, but
did not letter. Good rebound man and fair shot. An honor student.

BUESCHER, JOHN- forward or center- 20 -home, Beardstown, I11l.; graduate
of Beardstown high school, 1938; coached by Clyde McQueen. Potentially
a great basketball player. Incredibly smooth for a sophomore. Although
skinny enough to be known as "The Thin Man", he is a vicious scrapper
in scrambles for the ball. Superb passer and a fine rebound man. Was
interested in coming to K.U. by ane of Dr. Allen's best friends, who
resides in Beardstown. The star of la st year's freshman team.

ENGLEMAN, HOWARB- forward- 21 -home, Arkansas City; graduate of Arkan-
sas City high school, 1937; played under Coach Everett Nicholson. A
brilliant scoring forward. Not the world's most consistent cager, but
a@ player who can reach sizzling heights. Holds the K.U. individual
scoring record at 27 points, a mark he set against Oklahoma as a soph6o-
more. Known as "Rope", due to his kinky blonde hair. Was hot at the
N.c.A.A. tournament in Kansas City last year, averaging 13 points a
game in three contests. Racked up his season's high of 21 points there,
against Rice. Made the all-tournament team. A very smooth ball player.

HALL, VANCE- ferward- 19 -home, Downs; graduate of Downs high school,
1939; coached by Paul Starbuck and Cade Suran. A high school sensation,
who averaged about 17 points a game his senior year playing with a small
Class B high school. Outstanding asset is his shooting eye. Can loop
them in from long range and is a good one-hand shot. Surprisingly good
on rebounds. Needs polish, but has improved a good deal in a year.

HALLBERG, JOHN- forward- 19 -home, Kansas City, Mo.; graduate of West-
port high school in Kansas City, 1939; played under Coach Gayle Chubb.
A Kansas hope for the future. This young giant who stands 6 feet 8 in-
ches tall is not expected to see much action this year, but may event-
ually develop into a good basketball player. Is too awkward now.
HOGBEN, WILLIAM- forward or guard- 20 -home, Kansas City, Mo.; graduate
of Southwest high school in Kansas City, 1937; coached by Mel Bishop.
Appears to have hit his stride. Did not play the caliber of ball the
past two years that he seemed capable of. Best shot on the squad in
pbactice, but a "dud" in games. This was attributed partially to the
fact that he was only 19 last year as a junior. Now is playing the
brilliant ball in games that he flashes in practice. Accurate shooter
both from long range and close in. Smooth passer and ball handler.

HUNTER, T.P.- forward- 23 -home, Oklahoma City, Okla.; graduate of
Central high school in Oklahoma City, 1937; coached by Clarence Breit-
haupt. An angular boy who appears awkward on the court, but who is
effective. Lettered last year after being scholastically ineligible his
sophomore year. Good man under the basket. Also is an accurate shot.

JOHNSON, ROBERT- guard- 20 -home, Kansas City, Kan.; graduate of Shaw-
nee Mission high school at Merriam, 1938; played under Coach Harold
Reade. Shifted to guard this season after playing forward throughout
his previous cage career. A hard worker and a real battler. Lettered
last year and was the best of that sophomore crop. Is fast and has a
lot of drive. Should improve as he gains more experience.

KLINE, JOHN- guard- 21 -home, Hutchinson; graduate of Hutchinson high
school, 1936; played under Coach "Chop" Cairns. The "muscle man" of the
Kansas team. Does the heavy duty rebounding on defense and always is
assigned to guard any giant on the opposing team. Is no skyscraper
himself, but is big enough to handle most real big men. scales in at
195 pounds now and has had enough experience to know how to work the
backboards. Has contributed materially along this line the past two
years. Played a year at Hutchinson Junior College before entering K.U.

SANNEMAN, NORMAN- guard- 24 -home, Topeka; graduate of Topeka high
school; coached by "Buck" Weaver. A promising candidate, despite the
fact that he has only one year of cligibility. Played two years of
varsity ball at Washburn College in Topeka. Was quite a scorer at Wash-
burn. Retains his scoring ability and is improving fast on fundamentals.
Has a tremendous amount of spring in his legs, which makes him a form-
idable rebound man. Also can bat shots away from the basket on defense.

SOLLENBERGER, MARVIN- guard- 20-home, Hutchinson; graduate of Hutchin-
son high school, 1938; coached by "Chop" Cairns. A promising candidate
at gua rd. Fine defensive guard and a good rebounder. A husky boy.
Handles the ball well and is a good passer. Wears glasses on the court.
Had a year of basketball at Hutchinson Junior College. A standout in
football and tennis, as well as basketball in high school.

WALKER, CHARLES- forward or guard- 20 -home, Hutchinson; gradua te of
Hutchinson high school, 1938; one of three Jayhawks who played their
high school ball under Coach "Chop" Cairns. A player who has improved
greatly in the past year. Got a late start at K.U. as he did not go out
for freshman basketball and reported late last year. Is very smooth and
has enough size to make a fine ball player. Wears glasses on the court.
