+ AMERICAN RED CROSS NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON, D. C. February 4, 1942 Dr. F. C. Allen Chairman Department of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas My dear Dr. Allen: Mr. Lester Kappelman has made application to the American Red Cross for a position as Recreation Worker in connection with the Service to the Armed Forces in one of the New Island Bases. He has given your name as one of the persons who would be familiar with his ability, experience, and character. This position requires well-rounded recreation experience. In other words - we want a person who not only can handle highly competitive sports, but also group games, handicrafts, community sing- ing, dramatics and passive recreation. He must have not only the a- bility to teach, coach, and direct, but he should be able to organize group leaders so as to be able to multiply his efforts in such a way that the recreation program will reach all corners and groups within the Camp. In your opinion is Mr. Kappleman capable of getting along well - not only with the officers, but also the enlisted men? Has he ever been connected with subversive groups which would raise a question as to his loyalty to the United States? We would appreciate your candid opinion regarding Mr. Kappelman in light of the above questions. His application is being held up pend- ing return of satisfactory references. Sincerely yours, /) aN a Whe : Joseph |W. Se Asst. Director of Personnel
