1250 Edgewood Road Lake Forest, Tllinois May 16, 1942 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Department of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: T am applying for a commission in the Naval Reserve and would be very grateful if you could write a letter of recommendation for me. Just a general - ' character recommendation is needed, I believe, since T have no special qualifications. If commissioned, I would be given training for Armed Guard, that is, acting as gunnery gfficer on a merchant ship. If you could say that;was a person of good character, made pretty good grades, played on the tennis team and later coached it, or something of the sort it would be fine. The letter should be addressed to the Director, Office of Naval Officer Procurement, Chicago, Illinois, but should be sent to me so that I can include it with my application papers. I graduated from K. U. in 1935 and after two years of graduate work and teaching there, went to Yale. I've combined graduate study and teaching until last June when I finally got my Ph.D. This year I have been an assistant professor of English at Lake Forest, College, near Chicago. Although we have been away from Kansas for several years now, we have continued to follow your basketball teams, and they have given us plenty of opportunity jo take pride in their achievements. We had the pleaure of hearing you over the radio on Bob Elson'ts program when you brought your team to Chicago this winter. Sineerely, De oe
