Allen: Lawson: Allen $ Lawson: Allen: Woll, Doan Lawson, Is hogld say that the now education recognizes physical oducation and undertakes to edueato tho whole-childeinghis@ onviromnont by turning to physical education with the recognition that it has great opportimities to be educationally superior to tho old traditional academic curriculum. Whether it is or not dopends on the insight ond wdorstanding of our profession in scoing tho arcas of oducational superiority in our programe Physieal education is an activity programe It is made of the stuff of child interosts ond pure poses: play, rhytha, individual stunts, camping, canocing, dramatic play and pageants, Tho loaders can soo and answor the child's porplex- ities and fears about himsclf: how to bo attractivo, how to make friends, how to dance, how to act at partics, how to have 2 good come plexion, how to gain and to lose weight «= these are all probloms that are answered by an efficiont reereation enginocr. Further, I might add that it recognizes the whole child and his onviromment as a unit in behavior (fceling, physiology, motor skills, values) - is in a gamo reacting to othors in that game and the pattern of the game itself. Thon your idea of this type of program is that the empmsis is placed on boing happy and onjoying one's self and in developing not only powers, but in enlarging tho arons of individual and social enjoymente In short, do you fecl that modern physical education will make not only better bodics, but happier and better lives which will be onriched in personal living and fit more officiontly and happily into everyday lifc? Yes, that is truc, Doan Lawson. Physical cducation is, in the main, iced by yomg, vigorous, attractivo people who are thomselvos active and happy individuals. It has large wits of oxporience to offer the child, such as ploy days, pageants, dancedramas, winter sports, carnivals, May days, camping and outing trips, in which much more than @ skill is involved os an outcome. It is relatcd to a growing social philosophy that play is part of the good life and should be mado available for all people. But, Dre Allen, are coaches or thoso in charge of physical edueation in high schools and colleges really concerned about a physical educa. tion progrom inwhich students participate because thoy like to play for the fun of it or for the physical gains involved, or are they thinking solely about building winning tcams or toams which show up woll in competition? Aro they concerned with or interested in the alleround cducation of students? Look at tho trend during the past 25 yoearse Now the coaches arc getting into tho spirit of toaching, and all coaches will soon be teachers and we shall not have just the highly specialized coach (unless it would be in the wmiversitios), but in tho high sehool the coaches will take part in academics because they will be oducatorse They will be teachers utilizing their porsonality and prowess in teaching youth, rather than thinking only in terms of coaching competitive teans.e
