November 20, 19396 Dear lire Spencer: Your special delivery air mail letter arrived at my home last evenings I eam sorry to state that it will Thaniing you for your inquiry, I em Very sincerely yours, : Director of Physical Edueation and Recreation, PCA sAdI Varsity Basketball Coaches DON SPENCER & lO0l PARK AVENUE NEW YORK, N. Y. CAledonia 5.7554 November 18, 1939 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: I note that you have scheduled a basketball game in Chicago for early in January, and wonder whether it would be possible for you to extend your trip somewhat to participate in two games, one at Baltimore and the other at White Plains, This year, we are working together with the University of Baltimore and the Westchester County Center in scheduling a series of twelve basketball double-headers, Among the leading collegiate teams already scheduled to take part in these games are Oregon, Tulane, Oklahoma A. & M., Dartmouth, California, Stanford, Clemson, Michigan State, Yale, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Michigan, etc. We had in mind your playing the University of Baltimore on January 6 and the University of North Carolina on November 11. Both games should be very good attractions. If the January 6 date is not available, we would like to book you for January 13 in Baltimore. The Baltimore Coliseum has a seating capacity of 5500, a regulation size court with a specially treated floor surface, and the newest type of glass backboards. It is centrally located, and easily reached from any part of the city. Basketball in Baltimore has always been successful in the past, with almost 6000 people jamming in to see the Ohio State - Baltimore game. This year, with the introduction of double-headers, a capacity crowd for all games seems assured, The Westchester County Center, located in White Plains, just outside of New York, draws spectators from all the commuting towns. For the past two years, single attractions in White Plains have averaged 4700 in attendance, and this year, scheduling double-headers Should mean sell-outs at each game. The White Plains auditorium will accommodate almost 6000 fans. We can offer you a minimum guarantee of $800.00, with a privilege of 15% of the gross receipts after the deduction of State and Federal taxes, if you can play two games for us. The average price of tickets is $1.00. If you can play in only one game, we can guarantee you $350.00 for a single game either in White Plains or Baltimore, with the same percentage arrangement. If scholastic schedules do not interfere with this proposed trip, it would give your boys an opportunity to see both New York and Washington, to play before metropolitan crowds and New York sports writers who will cover the games at White Plains. The revenue from the trip should make it self-sustaining at least. We would appreciate very much your wiring us immediately if you would be interested in playing either one or two games. A Record of Success e THE COUNTY CENTER was opened in May, 1930, to serve the recreational needs of Westchester’s 520,000 residents. Its reputation, based on the diversity and popularity of events presented in this period, is well-established. World-famous musicians and theatrical stars, lecturers and statesmen, champions of the sports world and artists, have come to the Center to contribute their share to the enjoyment and cultural life of Westchester. A recent development is the increased popularity of the County Center for exposition purposes. Automobile, antique, horticultural, business, housing, historical and other outstanding shows attract wide attendance from the consumer-public. Occupying an imposing parkway site, the large, impressive building of monolithic concrete construction in modern architectural design attracts the attention of thousands of motorists daily. Not only is it located virtually in the center of Westchester, but is at the junction of the Bronx River Park- way and Central Avenue, with the White Plains station of the New York Central R.R. nearby. 1800 cars may be parked in the Center's free parking area. Of particular interest to those not already familiar with the Center are its moderate rentals and the consistently courteous and efficient service ol its permanent staff, engaged by the Westchester County Recreation Com- mission. For civic and educational events of a non-partisan nature, for which no admission is charged, the County Center is available without cost. .
