Allen Department of Physical Examination University of Kansas Dear Dr. Allen, Enclosed is a list of basket ball players examined and the pathological findings noted. None of them are of great significance. The routine examination of basket ball players included urinalysis and x-ray of the chest, in one case (Mosser) fluoroscopy of the heart and in one case x-ray of the right knee (Hartman). We do not routinely give a chest x-ray with the yearly examinations but have done so on the basket ball players each year to make sure there was no undiscovered heart or lung pathology and as a matter of record. I believe every athlete should have a chest x-ray at the beginning of the season. Sincerely, jal L, Carncteaor Ralph/I. UNIVERSITY DAILY KAN SAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1939 T. he Cowboys Are Coming Coach F. C. “Phog” Allen’s Jay- hawker basketbail team, easy win- ner over the freshman squad last week, will have all it can handle in the form of Oklahoma A. and M. in the season’s opener Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Hoch auditorium. Last year Kansas dropped two games to the Cowboys at Stillwater, and took the single return game “here late in the season. 1 Ses Tali ott. Henry Iba, crafty skipper for the Oklahomans, has another ‘power- house coming’ up this year and should prove one of the toughest foes the Jayhawk cagers encounter all season. Following is an A. and M. dope story taken from the Daily O’Collegian, student paper at Still- water: “For the coming season Iba has some of the best material ever as- sembled at a midland school. For- mer all-state high school players rom three states are among the 0 varsity candidates that include eight lettermen, two squadmen and 10 sophomores. “Except for one guard, Iba could start the same team Tuesday night that finished last year’s campaign. Forwards Harvey Slade, senior, and Gene Smelser, junior; Center Jess Renick, senior and Guard Howard Doyle, senior. are all back this year. “However, Iba plans to use Ren- ick, picked as a forward on the All-Missouri Valley conference team of 1939, at either a forward or I Strong A.&M. Team Here Next Tuesday guard berth. Slade, too, may be shifted to a guard position. “Other returning lettermen are: Forwards Art Johnson, senior; and Harvey Pate, junior; Center How- ard Francis, junior; and Guard Jack Hopkins, junior. “No doubt some of the lettermen will have to hustle to make Iba’s club this season with so much fine new talent available. “Four six-foot, five-inch centers are paced by Vernon Schwertfeger, a junior college transfer from Dodge City, Kan. Three sophomore pivot men are Herb Kirchmeyer, Cushing; Eugene Bell, Jay; and Herschel Gray, Chickasha. “Bidding hard for a forward po- sition are four crackerjack sopho- mores, L. J. Eggleston, J. T. New- man, Charles Scheffel and Roy Gardner. Eggleston is a former all- Oklahoma high school forward who averaged 21 points'a game for his four year at Walters, Okla. New- man counter 822 points for 40 games in his senior year at Wil- ~ | liams high of Quanah, Tex. Scheffel and Gardner were stars of strong Enid and Ramona high school teams. ; ' “Three sophomore guards include Leroy Floyd, twice all-Kansas high school guard from Argonia, Kan.; Bud Milliken, all-Missouri high school guard in his senior year at St. ‘Joseph, Mo.; and Ralph Clovis of El Reno. The school is housed in a down town building in Los Angeles and is engaged mainly in night school work. One of its instructors, a Mr. Husband, has been one of the leaders in our re- cent "ham and eggs" campaign. The list of games which they present on their schedule appears imposing. Naturally I have no facts as a basis for doubting their statements, but so far as I know, they have never played one of these schools and my guess is that they meant to say they had written to these schools for games. ae I would recommend to you that you not consider a game with such a school.
