For- mer all-state high school players rom three states are among the 0 varsity candidates that include eight lettermen, two squadmen and 10 sophomores. “Except for one guard, Iba could start the same team Tuesday night that finished last year’s campaign. Forwards Harvey Slade, senior, and Gene Smelser, junior; Center Jess Renick, senior and Guard Howard Doyle, senior. are all back this year. “However, Iba plans to use Ren- ick, picked as a forward on the All-Missouri Valley conference team of 1939, at either a forward or I Strong A.&M. Slade, too, may be shifted to a guard position. “Other returning lettermen are: Forwards Art Johnson, senior; and Harvey Pate, junior; Center How- ard Francis, junior; and Guard Jack Hopkins, junior. “No doubt some of the lettermen will have to hustle to make Iba’s club this season with so much fine new talent available. “Four six-foot, five-inch centers are paced by Vernon Schwertfeger, a junior college transfer from Dodge City, Kan. Three sophomore pivot men are Herb Kirchmeyer, Cushing; Eugene Bell, Jay; and Herschel Gray, Chickasha. “Bidding hard for a forward po- sition are four crackerjack sopho- mores, L. J. Eggleston, J. T. New- man, Charles Scheffel and Roy Gardner. Eggleston is a former all- Oklahoma high school forward who averaged 21 points'a game for his four year at Walters, Okla. New- man counter 822 points for 40 games in his senior year at Wil- ~ | liams high of Quanah, Tex.
