Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: You know the sort of meetings we have here in Cleveland for our baskete ball rules interpretation. With that knowledge, would you think that Quigley would have anything to add to the meeting? Is he a good speaker, etc. etc.? We haven't yet decided on the dates of our meetings, but we should know that within the next few days and I may be in a position then to go forward with complete plans for our interpretation meetings, Last year the meetings were held November 28 and 29, and may be held at approximately the same dates this year, I have asked Oswald Tower but do not know whether he can come for the dates mentioned. In case he cannot come and in case you do not believe that Quigley can do the thing we want, would you be available? At one time you said you would be willing to help out, and I know the fellows would be glad to have you back, I am just feeling the situation out, in the hopes that we can get things sufficiently well in hand so that we will not be without the services of an efficient speaker and interpreter, With personal regards, I am Sincerely yours Floyd A. December 14, 1939 Dear Phog:- I found your letter upon my return from Chicago today. Immediately I called Marty Sommers, of the Post, and he tells me he knows of no article they have on hand which speaks slightinely of your new game. There is an article coming out soon under the title Take Away the Backboards -- which he says is controversial. I suppose it is another argument about chenges in the game. They also have an article about some game developed in West Virginia called (of all things) Poontang. But he still insists he knows of no derogatory remarks about your new game. There is mention of your name in one article, which st&tes that you proposed a twelve-foot basket. That is true -- I should say. I am starting to watch the papers for Big Six basketball scores. Some of us Kansans in the East are getting pretty discouraged over the football scores -- and I might say that I hope you realize how many real stanch friends you have among the men I talk to around here. In that connection I won't yield to anyone. | Phog, I think you can quiet your fears about a slam in the Post -- or else Marty didn't remember any. Hope you have a great season this year, and we'd be mighty happy to see whenever you are in the East. Why haven't you hooked up in some of Madison Garden double headers. Basketball has climbed in popularity around here end I'd like to see Kansas get some of the limelight. I believe on the whole the Hast is behind the Midwest in basketball. Cordially, Decenber 26, 19396 I hope we will see you in Topeka at the Sunflower Tournament on December 28, 29 and 30. Our boys are reporting here for a work-out this afternoon to our going to Topekm. Certainly we here in Cleveland enjoying having you with us, and I am sure you did our boys here a great deal of good. I haven't had an opportunity to visit with any of the people who attended the McDonald meeting, but I am certain they also en= joyed having you with them, My trip to Ann Arbor was a very satisfactory and satisfying one. Five of the top-flight doctors of the University staff went over me, Three of them voluntarily said they hoped that when they were my age they would be in as good physical condition as they found me to be. Dr. Barker, the cardiologist, really gave me a very thorough going-over. He found my heart to be in A-l shape, told me to go ahead and play handball - no singles, but doubles = not to exceed two or three times a week until I had some definite symptom that the exercise was not agreeing with me, Looking forward to seeing you again in the near future and, if not before, at the time of the meeting in Kansas City, I am as always, with many thanks Sincerely yours Floyd A.
