CURTIS PUBLISHING COMPANY MEMORANDUM Date From. December 14, 1939 Dear Phog:- I found your letter upon my return from Chicago today. Immediately I called Marty Sommers, of the Post, and he tells me he knows of no article they have on hand which speaks slightinely of your new game. There is an article coming out soon under the title Take Away the Backboards -- which he says is controversial. I suppose it is another argument about chenges in the game. They also have an article about some game developed in West Virginia called (of all things) Poontang. But he still insists he knows of no derogatory remarks about your new game. There is mention of your name in one article, which st&tes that you proposed a twelve-foot basket. That is true -- I should say. I am starting to watch the papers for Big Six basketball scores. Some of us Kansans in the East are getting pretty discouraged over the football scores -- and I might say that I hope you realize how many real stanch friends you have among the men I talk to around here. In that connection I won't yield to anyone. | Phog, I think you can quiet your fears about a slam in the Post -- or else Marty didn't remember any. Hope you have a great season this year, and we'd be mighty happy to see whenever you are in the East. Why haven't you hooked up in some of Madison Garden double headers. Basketball has climbed in popularity around here end I'd like to see Kansas get some of the limelight. I believe on the whole the Hast is behind the Midwest in basketball. Cordially,
