So far, she has been unable to find the record. Their files go back to 1916 and seemingly, there is no record kept of the names. Dr. Jager has no recollection of the case. The girl advised me a few minutes ago that she will continue her search and notify me if she finds the case. I do not believe she is any too anxious to make a real thorough search so suggest that Dr. Knutson (if that is spelled correctly) write to Dr. Jager, whose address is 611 Beacon Building, and tell him exactly what he wants. Allen University of Kansas _ Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: Thank you for your letter of February 14 regarding Reverend Poteat. It so happens that I haven't had the pleasure of running into this chap, but will do so in the near future and see if we can't interest him in an active way in our athletic program here. Things seem to be going along reasonably well with us here in Cleveland. I have no personal cause for complaint, I guess, and trust the same holds true for you. From Porter's note, it would appear that the Basketball Rules Committee meeting would probably be in Chicago. However, I don't know that I would want to decide the thing, without referring it to the Executive Committee, on a 9-10 vote, as he has done. Looking forward to seeing you in either Chicago or New York (wherever the meeting is held), and assuring you that I am always glad to see a letter addressed to me from Kansas, I am as always Sincerely yours ay FAR: McG Floyd A. Salmon, Jr. 40 Wall St. New York, New York Oswald Tower Andover, Massachusetts Willard A. Witte Univ. of Wyoming Laramie, Wyoming TO MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL COMMITTEE: At the last rules committee meeting, Saint expressed himself as wishing to be relieved of the responsibility of the chairmanship of the Basketball Rules Committee, We prevailed upon him to accept, and rewelected him, as you know. Some time ago in private conversation, Saint rather intimated it was his honest desire to get out. However, sometimes people say those things without really meaning them, and I wanted to check up on it. Under date of January 18, I wrote Harold Olsen, Basketball Coach at Ohio State, and asked him to find out what Saint really wanted to do. I have a letter before me, written January 22, from "Olie" in which he says, in part, as follows, "Saint really wants to be released of his basketball committee work, He has had ‘enuf! and wants to 'take it &@ little easier," At another place in my letter to "Oliet, I said that in case Saint really wanted to get out, I thought that I was only expressing the desire of the committee in saying that we would like to present him with a token which he would like to have, and which would be of service to him the remainder of his life, I indicated to Olie that we wouldn't be interested in going out and raising a large sum of money, but that we would want to do something that would please Saint, I am again quoting from Olie!'s letter, “As to a memento of some kind to give Saint --- for a good many years he has had a wrist watch (an old 'Ohio Relays! trophy) = but that has about outlived its usefulness. I'm sure that a nice wrist watch, properly engraved, etc., would be a very welcome gift." — | Cai et Members - National Basketball Rules Committee Page 2. January 26, 1938 Now then, I don't want to be presumptious in this matter, and I am probably no mere fond of Saint than the rest of you fellows. I should ike to have a hand in presenting him with a really fine wrist watch. Of course, some of you may have ideas that are better than this. If you have, let's have them so that we can all work together on the thing. I have gone into the matter of wrist watches a little bit, and find that a very fine wrist watch, with fifth second stop attachment on it, in a solid gold case, properly engraved, can be purchased for about $200.00 or $225.00. The movement in the watch would be a Paul Valette in a seventeen jewel, or better, movement. The case would have to be a particularly heavy and durable case, in order to protect the mechanism of the watch and my judgment is that it should probably be eighteen carat yellow gold, It may be that some of you are in a position to get a really high quality watch of this type, at a better figure than this. The figure is given me by a personal friend in the jewelry business, who said that he was giving me a close figure on it, and that he would little more than pay expenses on the transaction. Just to finish up the business in the one letter - in case you agree that we should do something of this sort for Saint, I am raising the general question as to the people who should be offered the opportunity of making the gift possible. My feeling is that possibly we should not go back of the date of the reorganization, excepting for such men as Ralph Morgan, A. E. Metzdorf, George Hepbron. From the high school standpoint, we might possibly want to offer all of the high school men who have been on the committee an opportunity, if they care to avail themselves of it. In a list of this sort, we would have the eighteen men who are on this year's committee, together with William McK. Barber, Collins and Swaffield, This would give us the eighteen members, together with Morgan, Metzdorf, Hepbron, McK.Barber, Collins and Swaffield, making jn all around twenty~five fellows. Naturally, this matter has to be handled confidentially because we don't want to tip the thing off in advance to Saint. Upon receipt of this letter, won't you please sit down and write "June! Salmon what you think about the whole thing, "June" can then proceed as he thinks wise. My only wish in the matter is to have an opportunity to have a part in doing gomething for Saint, who has probably done more for the game of basketball in an administrative way, than any other single individual on the conmittee. With personal regards, and assuring you that my desire is to be entirely helpful in this matter, I am Sincerely yours FAR:McG Treasurer February 14, 1938. ROSE EDITOR THE CURTIS PUBLISHING COMPANY INDEPENDENCE SQUARE * PHILADELPHIA February 1, 1938 Dear Phog:- Yessir, I am still around, and I would be most? happy to see Better Basketball, if Mr. Curtis McGraw is willing to send it. I might be able to give it a review on our boys' page -- which is seen by the boys in a million and three quarters families. But I am boasting. I'm still crazy about sports, and the old rumbling desire to write some more is on me. I am starting work this week on a football article, with Red Frissell, who has become the ace referee here in the East. He has worled all the big games -- Yale-Harverd, Army-Notre Dame, Army-Navy, been to the Rose Bowl and so forth. We are going to try and hit The Saturday Evening Post with it. Hone for us, won't you? I had a chance to read a manuscript that the Post bounced back to the authors, but I think you might be interested on way or another in the proposal. Franny Murray, who played football and basketball at Penn got to mumbling over being put out of basketball games on four personals. He says a guy isn't worth ea dam to himself or the team when ‘he. gets three of them -- playing on eggs. He thinks a hockey penalty box would be a better bet. I think he was right in saying that a game goes to pieces when the stars come out on personals. He cited a number of games to back up his arguments. I liked the article, but the Post staff bounced it back at Franny and his ghost. I didn't care much for Sam Barry's article last year in the Post. There ought to be good basketball material for Post articles. Football stuff seems to be eaten up and basketball is still going great guns. I scan very closely the basketball scores in the peper, and as usual you seem to be taking down your share -- which is almost all of them. I wanted to see John Bunn's Hank Luisetti, but about 20,000 of us got shut out at the door. Hank seemed to have made John -- or is it the other way round. I see he's being upped at Stanford. I didn't know him at Kansas, but I'm always glad to see a Jayvhawker get there. If you get East this winter or spring, won't you stpp by to see us? Ben Hibbs adds his greetings. I was glad to get your letter in regard to our trainer. im our new athletic set-up the same trainer that we have had here for the past fourteen years was reemployed, Our situation here is somewhat different than at other schools, We have taken the Athletic Department into the University and have cut out all alumni connections, The Dean of the college is the head of our Department, All head coaches are given the ranking of professors and are members of the University Senate and their tenure of office is the same as a regular professor, I was glad to get such a set-up because under the old system we were fast getting no where, Our football situation got to such a point that it was deplorable, I will tell you more about it when I see you, I have heard of Dees and will be on the look-out for anything that may come up, I know that he is a fine boy and I only regret that we are not in a position to offer him an opportuni- ty. I have been getting along about as well as can be expected, I have discarded my brace and I feel somewhat lost without it, I had some difficulty three weeks ago and was confined to my home for some eight days, At that time the doctors were of the opinion that I would have to have another operation but I am feeling fine again and I may fool them, I plan to come to the National Oonvention in Chicago and if I do I will enjoy visiting with you again, Mrs. Rupp joins me in sending our kindest regards to you and your family, Very sincerely, OME A, F, Rut Pepruary 16, 2195S x Mee Bill Robertson, 807 Petroleum Building, Olelahane.
