JULIAN E. RALSTON . ATTORNEY AT LAW 3 BROWN BUILDING 3 WICHITA, KANSAS November 9, 1937 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: I am in receipt of your letter of November 5th and in reply thereto am of the opinion that Mr. Paul A. (Pete) Lightner, Sport Editor of the Wichita Fagle, is probably, from a con- sistent standpoint, the best basketball writer insofar as newspaper writing is concerned providing he does not have an antipathy for the club or team he is writing up. If you mean, however, that you want the name of the local man best qualified to write from a technical standpoint, I doubt if there is any choice. Jack Copeland, whom you mention, is, of course, the Sport Editor for the Wichita Beacon. ‘There are two younger men who write for the Eagle; Virgil Corey is the Sport Editor for the Evening Eagle and is sometimes assisted by Vic Rugh, who is one of the announcers and the sports commentator for radio station K.F.H. which is owned and controlled by the Wichita Eagle. Then, of course, Leslie Edmonds is here in town. I have, in the last year, been managing the fortunes of the Wichita Fairfield Polo Club and heve found that Mr. Lightner can be depended upon to put out what I wanted in the way of write-ups, pictures, etc. much more consistently than Jack Copeland. I will say, however, that Copeland sometimes gave me a much bigger and better "spread" than did Lightner but sometimes I would find merely 2 picture or a small “box" in- stead of a decent write-up.
