Dr. F.C.Allen, Deptt of Athletics, Univ. of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen,- Ef’n is so much better to-day that I though I should tell you about it. He slept until 10:30, has no temperature and except for being very very weak seems more like he should. The trouhle with the elimination seems to have been overcome too and I am gre that was a contributing cause to his temperature yesterday. He walked to the bath room several times (against my better judgment) but was happy to find that his foot felt much better than it has at any time. I do believe, thanks to you, we are on the right track with that. Will let you hear from me later when he seems stronger and ready to perhaps have some more foot- treatments at your convenience. Very sincerely, Che National League of Drofessional Base Ball Clubs RE A Building - 30 Rockefeller Plaza Netw Work Wed. noone oe Dear Dr. Allen,- a : I did not get any word to you yesterday ee for I just did not have time to get it done. This morning ay I was waiting for the Yrs. visit, thinking I could tell you better about Erns condition after he had been here. He has just left. Ern grew much more comfortable yesterday afternoon after you left, was quite himself during the evening and had apretty good night. His tempe was about 99.2 during the day and this morning. It was up this noon to 101, but Dr. says there is nothing to be alarmed about- no trouble in the chest, but a"flu" condition. I hae had trouble about his bowels but Dre has just given me something and hope to have results soon. I feel that when it works, it probably will take the temperature downe I must hurry to get this off. I will not write you unless there is some significent change in his condétion. Just as soon as we can get rid of this flu- and I realize that is nothing to make light of- perhaps we can get at the foot again. It seems 0O.K. Dr. F.C.Allen, Dept of Fducation, Kansas Univ. Lawrence, Kans. Dear Dr. Allen,- As I told you, I would write again when Ern was recovered from his Flu attack. He has not had any temperature for two days and only a fraction of a degree the evening of the day before- no pain and seems to have thrown off that set back. The Dr. has rot seen him for several days- he was called out of town on account of the death of his father, but do not think he would have ad to seew Ern if he had been here. Ern sat up an hous yesterday and twice to-day for two hours one time and an hous and a helf another. Except for being very weak, he seems and looks so much better. Now at your convenience if you cared to come up to treat him again, we would be very grate ful. I think he would lixe to advise with you as to just how much and how fast he should work that foot out. Of course just as soon as he able, he could come to Lawrence for anything you would care to do. I can tell you again, how much we appreciate what you have done, and if it is too much of a sacrifice for you to get away, we would not want you to inconven- ience yourself. When I called — that first time, I was really scared. MCWILLIAMS for you to come up here again, as I know what a very eo busy man you are, and had that"guiltiest feeling” to have — you make that effort for us. Ern has made such rapid gains, in the few dsys since I wrote you that I am sure he is on his way. He has his shom on and is walking without crutches, for the first time since he was hurt. He"wiggles" and exercises his foot and toes as you advised him and can feel it getting better every day. In regard to the hot and cold water treat- ment, I am wondering since the foot has made so mucR progress, whether that would be a good thing. The hot water has a tendency to keep the foot tender, I would think, ahd he has had so much of that. However we will sure do it if you think best. Ern laughéd when I read him the part of your letter about the marbles. He said,"I cmldnt do that when my foot was in its prime. However we will mke a try at that too. In regard to coming to Lawrence, Ern thinks he would prefer to drive down and back at your convenience- as often and as soon as you think. He thinks he could come Fri. or Sat. as it suits you. He feels the sooner the better to get in shape as soon as possible. Will you please call us, #76, reverse the charges- as to when it would suit you for him to come? Dear "Phog"; I have your letter of a recent date and am herewith enclosing check to cover the expenses of the two trips to St.Merys and also your services; if 1 overlooked a foul let me know. 3 My leg gave me so much trouble that Dr.Riley suggested that I have an orthopedic specialist examine my foot; To make a long story short Mrs.Quigley and I went to Chicago to see Dr.Phillip Kretscher, whom you know. Likely the Netion's outstanding specialist: Result; Mercy Hospital for medication and then a cast that wi]jl remain on the foot and lower leg for three weeks more. Remained in the Hospital for twelve days and came home the day before Christmas Eve. The original pictures showed a fract- ure. We were all working on an incorrect premise that didnt do any good. Regardless of that I want to assure you of my appreciation of what you did for me. I should have taken care of this be- fore but I have let everything slide but canceling basket ball games. Both Mrs.Quigley and I wish to be re- membered kindly to Mrs.Allen and Jane, both of whom were so kind to us. My sincerest thanks and good wishes to you. January I2th 39. Dr. F.C.Allen, Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence Kansas. Dear "Phog"; Herewith enclosed check for $8.00 as per instfucted. p "Phog" none of us would ever/done the things we did had I known that there was a fracture; Everyone who asked me about the injury was told that there was no fracture; that the pictures didnt show a fracture. That was the information I got the night it was hurt and could do nothing otherthan operate on those in- structions; I know you would not have entertain- ed giving my foot any treatment had you known that it was fractured. I told you that; That wes what I was told. The swelling became pretty bad and Dr.Riley told me that it should be seen by a good orthopedic surgeon. We tried to contect Dr. Dixon but he was out of town end would not be home until the first of the next week. Marg wrote a complete history of the case to Dr.Kreuscher and he called me the next night and wanted to see the foot and said "Bring those pictures with you". He examined me and took several pictureg and found that the first picture,or pictures,I hdd taken showed two small fractures; thét was the I2th of December; The swelling Dr.Kreuscher diagnosed Lymphatitis and the medication for this was inter menus injections of iodide and another medicine, as tough to take as it is to spell, sulphsmillelide. The cast has been on nearly four weeks now and has two more to go. Looks like there are too many fouls in the basket ball games. dest regards and best Wishes.
