Dear Dr. Slee: I desire to thank you personally for your generosity in making it possible for a very deserving young man to remain in school. This young man's feather was a Spanish-American war veteran and was killed, The mother is in the home at Dodge City, and the young man in question had a brother who wes killed by lightning this summer. This chap is ome of the finest young men that I lmow of and he is not an athletic tramp by any manner of means. He will make a name for himself, and you without doubt will receive a letter from him. Iiater on he will call on you in person to thank you. Before he is out ef the University it is my opinion that his name. will be on the tongues of a great many of the faculty members and athletic followers. Mr. Hitt, our assistant registrar, has spoken of him, saying that he is one of the finest young men that he had met. He is a fine student, a fine athlete, and a real gentleman. Mr. Hitt was a Summerfield scholar and a brilliant teacher of mathematics, so I am sure that his evaluation is a real recommendation. Dear Bill, Believe it or not, I've been carrying your letter of May 27 on my desk for all this time waiting for an opportunity where- by I could write you a long and lengthy epistle such as your good letter. pa I handled our Varsity baseball in addition to my own adminis- trative duties last spring so that tied me up more definitely than I had been heretofore. Then, I had a great many high school commencement dates, and in addition, I had a lot of grapefruit and lettuce speeches to make, 80 the summer came on and since I taught eight classee in the summer session and hed complete charge of the University summer recreation course, I still found myself busy. As soon as that was finished I went to Iowa to a coaching school which was conducted by Clarke Shaughnessey, Bernie Bierman, Henry Toba, and myself. On Sept. 6, my daughter, Jane, was married to a young Princeton man who resides in Chicago, and if you have women folk who have to do with weddings you can appreciate what a busy time we had. Then, on Sppt. 15 we got our youngest son, Bob, and our youngest deughter, Eleanor, on their way to the University of Pennsylvania. Bob is studying medicine--he graduated from here last June. His address is Room 44, Norris Hall, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa. leanor wanted to get away from home after her sophomore year, so she is enrolled in the School of Pine Arts and she is living at 415 Sergeant Hall, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa. . Please do not feel at all that you are under any obligations to see him until you have an opportunity, but I know that Bob would be gled to see you if you have any tize. We are alone in our big house here and the way we locate each other is by keeping still and listen for the other rattling around--like two dried peas in a pod--so you see, that's easy. Eleanor and Bob attended the Kansas-Temple game in Philadelphia last Friday night and seemed to have a good time. We got a fine letter from Eleanor and instead of being homesick she is en- thusiastically liking it more every dey and we know that Bob realises that he is entering a profession that takes close application and much work to get the proper training. Now, talking shop just a little--the Eastern boys of course favor higher backboards because of the highly promotive element of the game that they indulge in. They are thinking about those extra seats behind the back- beard that they can sell for more if they can see through iteedon't worry, the rules committee will never sanction a back stop, and the fan-shaped backboard will stay. I have a letter from Val Lentz of Westpoint and I told him frankly that a group of the Eastern coaches were going to cause a rift between the rules committee at the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Nels Norgren, head coach at the University of Chicagp, and president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches appointed me as chairman of the rules committee for the coaches association, but I refused the honor, if it is such, »becaus¢ the person in control of the coaches association is going to get in dutch in my opinion by allowing the Yiddishers to run the show. . I wish that I might write you a longer letter, but my time is — gone, so please give the Allen's love to your lovely wife and your fine mother. And by the way--your fraternity brother, Howard Engleman is now with Phillip's Petroleum Co. at Bartles- ville, Okla. He made a fine record in academics and athletics and was elected president of the senior class in the School of Business. We are very proud of chaps such as he. Allen Physical Education Dept. Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear "Doc": When I was in Lawrnece last week I was left with the impression that Maurice Cannady may be drafted into the Army sometime soon. If Maurice will have to leave’ I would appreciate it if you would recommend me for his position, or do you think this advisable? I like my job here but I believe if I could get a position in Lawrence I would be in a better place for Dr. Elbel to help me with my graduade work, also I feel getting into the Lawrence school system would be a big advancement. Augusta lost its first game last Friday night (6-0) to Valley Center. Even though statistics showed that we outplayed them we lost to a very good team. My team this year is improved and has a great deal more weight over last year. I would like to thank you for the job you gave me the past summer--I really did enjoy doing what little I could do. I am sorry that I did not get to talk to you Saturday afternoon, but I hope to be in Lawrence again soon and will See you at that time. Respectfully, Lele DAVID L. SHIRK DLS:m1
