48 Ashland Road, Summit, N.J. December 15, 1940, Dr. Fhog Allen Director of Athletics Kansas University Lawrence, Kansés, Dear Dr. Allen: As a former member of a Kansas University basket ball team. I91I5- with Bill Weaver, Stuffy Dunmire, Lefty Sproul ete. I have been looking forward to the time of seeing my former school rep- resented in basket ball competition at Madison Square Garden in New York. I have seen Oklehoma University, Oklahoma A & M., the University of Missouri and other western teams in competition there in other years and am glad to note that K.I. will be in |New York on December 28. I shall plan to be there and wish to extend to you and the team the best of luck in advance of the game which I expect to see K.U. win. I note that your competitor will be Fordham University and the thought occured to me that you might be interested in seeing some newspaper clippings regarding recent games played by that school. I'm enclosing clippingsccoveting four games, From these you will note that Fordham has won three and lost one to date. The loss was to Dartmouth by the close score of 44 to 40, While I have not seen Fordham play this year, she must have a good team. Fordham defeated Brooklyn College, which team in turn defeated fhe Ohrbachs, the team that gave the Tulsa Oilers the scare of their lives this year. I saw the latter two teams play end was amazed to see the small fast team of Ohrbachs tie the oilers twice and finally loose by only two points on a second extra period. . Fitzgerald. left guard, eppears to be the outstanding player on the Fordhem teem, being the high scorer to date. The team uses long shots, as is cheractistic of New York teams, and is deadly on sét shots from most any angle. In my opinion, 6s man to man defense is best emp}oyed against these N.Y. teams end the players should be rushed constantly. To let them set uprplays from the quarter court is always dangerous. To let them have many free throws is also hazardous. Saturday night the Oklahoma Aggies defeated City College at the Garden 32 to 24. This team representing New York is considered by the sports writers to be better than Fordham, but comperisons in this game as you know are difficult at best. New York University is strong this year and Long Island University is probably the best of all in the city. I'm glad that K.U. in its first venture at Madison Square doesn't have to meét the batter team, although I would probably bet on K.U. ‘coming through. I have noted that you have taken over Texas University this year ahd that the prospects this year are good as usual. I sincerely hope the team is at its best at Madison Square and you may be assured that meny former K.U. rooters will be there to root for victory. There will be some 18,000 spectators I should judge, es two New York teams are in competition with two outside teams who” the fams know will give the customers # good gamesfor their money. Good luck end best wishes. Sincerely, a
