Ce Simons, President, The Lawrence Daily Journal World, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Mr. Simons: I am returning herewith your check which you so kindly mailed me for what little service I was able to render. I could not think of taking it, Mr. Simons, because it would rob me of something that I gave you as a neighbor and a friend. You have been very kind and too generous heretofore. Just because I happened to be in a position to serve you and Irs. Simons makes it worth more to me not to take it, than to accept it. When a man offers to pay me for some service, then the offer is payment enough for the deed -- more than money. I trust that you will take this in the spirit that it is written. In one way I know it would make you feel better if I should cash the checke On the other hand, I assure you that you are under no obligation in any way whatsoever to me. You and your family have been very kind to the Allens on many occasions. So will you kindly void this check? Sams, Chapman, Kansase Dear Mrs. Sams: ¥ Thank you for your very good letter of the 10th instant. I ‘am glad that you enjoyed your work and Iam happy to say that you _did excellent work for us here at the University of Kansas Summer Session. I would offer no criticism other than I believe you worked too hard at your job. No one could say that you thought of slight- ing it, but I sometimes believe that you carry your burdens away from your classrooms : You were perfectly welcome to any information or help that you might have received from the course in Theory and Practice of Athletic Training. It is always a pleasure to me to be able to impart any information that can be transferred to other fields. Personally, I feel that you will be able to do much good, especially in the absence of a school nurse or a physician at your institution. Personally, I wuld not advise you to count very much on a position here for next sumer. Rather, if I were you, I would plan on a vacation for next summer and see what the following summer holds forth here at the University. I believe I explained to you rather briefly that while Dean Schwegler had made the recommendation for this position, he had not discussed finances with the budget committee, and it appeared as a very embarrassing financial problem to them. I do not believe that I am refealing any secrets when I - tell you that if our correspondence had not gone forward from this office promising you the position the budget committee would have rescinded all action if it were possible to have left you in no embarrassing position. I pressed your case because I knew the background and it was through no fault of yours whatsoever that there was an administrative slip-up. They took half of the salary, as I explained to you, from our budget, and half from the University - budget, and they had not counted on this, So there is rather a dark brown administrative taste in the budget committee's mouth. lrer- — sonally, as an administrator, I desire not to present the same situation next year with the same budget committee. ‘Therefore, I think we had better forego the proposition. In fact, on very good authority I learn there is a strong possibility we may not even heve a Summer Session next year. We will miss you because you were so loyal in every department. Your swimming was up to the usual high standard of teaching, and I heard nothing but the very best ~2- of comment on all of your activities. - I am leaving this ieee for Boone, Iowa, for the Towa State High School Athletic Association coaching school. Clark Shaughnessy, Bernie Bierman, Henry Iba and I will wee to instruct the coaches there from August 18 to 23. It is very pleasant here after the rain aia T om taking things in e lighter vein - not doing much heavy work, and I fully believe that with a few weeks rest I will be in er ¢ shape for the fall term. If there is any way in which I can help you in any position next summer, in any playground or recreation center, it will be a pleasure, >but as far as anything here at the University is concerned I am very sure that the curtailed budget will deny us an opportunity of offering you anything. With all good widtine for the success of your fine your femily, I an Sincerely yours, ES ; Director of Physical Education and Recreation, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. Ur.
