August 12, 1941. Mrs. Josephine L. Sams, Chapman, Kansase Dear Mrs. Sams: ¥ Thank you for your very good letter of the 10th instant. I ‘am glad that you enjoyed your work and Iam happy to say that you _did excellent work for us here at the University of Kansas Summer Session. I would offer no criticism other than I believe you worked too hard at your job. No one could say that you thought of slight- ing it, but I sometimes believe that you carry your burdens away from your classrooms : You were perfectly welcome to any information or help that you might have received from the course in Theory and Practice of Athletic Training. It is always a pleasure to me to be able to impart any information that can be transferred to other fields. Personally, I feel that you will be able to do much good, especially in the absence of a school nurse or a physician at your institution. Personally, I wuld not advise you to count very much on a position here for next sumer. Rather, if I were you, I would plan on a vacation for next summer and see what the following summer holds forth here at the University. I believe I explained to you rather briefly that while Dean Schwegler had made the recommendation for this position, he had not discussed finances with the budget committee, and it appeared as a very embarrassing financial problem to them. I do not believe that I am refealing any secrets when I - tell you that if our correspondence had not gone forward from this office promising you the position the budget committee would have rescinded all action if it were possible to have left you in no embarrassing position. I pressed your case because I knew the background and it was through no fault of yours whatsoever that there was an administrative slip-up. They took half of the salary, as I explained to you, from our budget, and half from the University - budget, and they had not counted on this, So there is rather a dark brown administrative taste in the budget committee's mouth. lrer- — sonally, as an administrator, I desire not to present the same situation next year with the same budget committee. ‘Therefore, I think we had better forego the proposition. In fact, on very good authority I learn there is a strong possibility we may not even heve a Summer Session next year. We will miss you because you were so loyal in every department. Your swimming was up to the usual high standard of teaching, and I heard nothing but the very best
