Allen Director of Physical Education Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lewrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Just received your letter and am very happy to hear you say that it is possible for the Seneca Basketball Teams to be guests of the University Athletic Association. The plan I had in mind was this, we would take six boys from the Seneca Public School and six boys from the Seneca Parochial School as guests. I have two season tickets which I purchased the first of the year which will take care of the drivers of each car group. Further plans will be made for their visit to the campus in this manner‘?. The Seneca students from the Hill will entertain these boys at an informal luncheon held probably at the Union Building. That, however, is tentative and merely a thought of the moment. It has yet to be worked out. I appreciate most heartily your cooperation in securing these permissions. The game which would be my selection for the boys to see would be the Kansas State game on February 25 as Kansas State is the competitive school in our district and the fact we'll really wallop them off their feet would be good psychology for our visiting basketball players. If you have further suggestions in ways for entertainment for our squad, would be very happy to have you write me. Again thank you. very trul nro Ad . Allen 511 W. 115th Ste, New York, NeYe, Dece 26, 1940. Dr. Forrest C. Allen, University of Kansas, Kansas City, Kan. Dear Doctor Allen: I have just read with much interest in the current issue of the Saturday Evening Post, Howard W. Turtle's article "Give the Ball To Junior." In that Turtle tells something of your background and adds "Phog never drinks or smokes," Dr. Louis J. Cooke, for many years a physical director at Minnesota, was the YMCA director of physical activities at Burlington, Vt. in 1392 and 1893 and later was graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Vermont. He came to Burlington from Springfield Training School and it was my privilege to enjoy a close friendship with him as we played on the first basketball team of the varsity and also on the baseball team which was good enough our senior year ('93) to defeat Yale three out of four games, one of them without a hit being pitched by Dr. &. Arlington Pond, my roommate and later a star pitcher for the old Oriols which carried such well known names as Jennings, MeGraw, Keeler and others. After the World War, in which I served as a Lt. Col. in the engineers, I had an oppurtunity to study first hand the damage being done to babes born in an institution established for unmarried mothers. That has been printed in different editions and I am taking the liberty of inclosing one of my last edition. Recently I granted permission to have this printed in Japan where they have a law prohibiting the sale or use of liquor or tobaeco to anyone of that country twenty years of age or under. That bill was put through the Japanese Diet by a collegemate of mine, Sho Nemoto of Tokio who introduced this legislation in 1900. They are now working to extend this age to 25, The first of each month Japan has instruction along this line _ for the benefit of her youth. This subject has been of great interest to me and my conclusions are based on a careful study of such available facts as I could secure and I trust I may have your cooperation as without doubt the uge of the cigarette is responsible for more ills than we know. May I also add that although I have passed my 7Oth birthday I recently passed a careful physical examination in connection with a request for the renewal of my military commission for another five years. The doctor said I would easily pass for not over 55 go I have proven that the proper care of one's health is the best preventative as I am never ill. The cab ride from the Allerton Hotel to the Coliseum and the discussion of various nicknames given you in the past brings to memory an incident relative to my home life in Independence, Missouri many years ago. Beleive me or not, my father always spoke of you as “Frog” Allen and I can and alwayé will remeinber so well the expiaining that my sister Nellie Port, ifty brother Eugene and I used to do to correct him-but in vain. We almost fell off of our chairs laughing at him and he especially got a kick out of Mr. W.T."Big Pete” and"Dick", You know he was an old time Sigma Chi and the eighth oldest living at the time he | passed away at age 87 in 1957. If you remember he was quite a "visitor" about the Allen Brothers Garage on Maple Avenue. It is hard to realize that the aforementioned jovial and good times took place over twenty two years ago. Do you remember that big old seven passenger Cadillac that Elmer and Hubert "shoved down my father's throat “ in 1913?Most every member of our family had real pleasure for eight long years out of that old bus.
