Allen, Lawrence, Kansas Dear Brother Allen: During the past ten years Phi Kappa Psi has served me in many ways, but, frankly, this is the first time that the brotherhood has been the means of gaining an introduction. However, I feel that you will be interested in what I have to say a it deals with a young man who hopes to enter college s ® His name, Porter Wiley, a transplanted Kentuckian, who has been a resident of my home town for the . past five or six years. He is a good basketball man from a mechanical angle, but it is his ambition to coach the game and he is, therefore, hopeful that he may attend some university where he may learn as well as play basketball. Kansas is his first choice. He was graduated from Columbia High in 1937, but due to financial matters has been unable to enter college as yet. I feel certain that he will need a part time job or scholarship, or both, to put him through any university. Porter was switched from one position to another as a junior in school, but as a guard in his senior year the captained the team that lost only in the finals of the State tourney. He is well proportioned and is around 6 foot 3 inches tall, throws lefthanded, age 19e . I know thet the Big Six plays very fast basketball and I am not sure that Porter could even meke your third or fourth team. This I do know, that no boy will be more sincere in his efforts to learn and make use of his opportunities. I would suggest that the University send Porter a catalogue with an explanation as to what scholarhsips, if any, may be open to freshmeng also, what part time jobs might be availablee This will give him an idea as to what he will have to spend should he be able to attend Kansas and will give him a full summer to make his decisione
