UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS LAWRENCE DIVISION OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS December 16, 1937. Justice Walter Thiele, Supreme Court, State House, Topeka, Kansase Dear Walter: I am making every legitimate effort possible to help Elmer Schaake land a job as football coach at South Dakota State College, at Brookings, S. De I have written to Dean Stallings, and have a very favorable reply. They are con- sidering him seriously. I believe it would be a fine thing if you could write Dean Stallings, acting athletic director, at South Dakota State College, a strong letter telling him all the fine things that you know about Elmer Schaake. By the way, Walter, I am going to send you a file on Schaake's situation so that you can bend yourself in his behalf. You know how fond of him I have always been, and I an sure that you have shared a like interest. You have helped him a lot and you are in a good spot to help him more. I talked to E. C. Quigley last night about the letter that I have just written Elmer, and Quigley is going to do everything he can for hime Of course, I have advised Elmer to get strong men in different fields of endeavor to recommend hime This will show the president in what esteem he is held among the people in Kansase You know Elmer has lost his job at Bethany through no fault of his. It is a poor school and they expect a lot more from anyone who is not a magician or a king prosel- yter. You can see from Thomas E. Ryther's letter that Elmer has a good strong inside track. Ernie Quigley said this to me in confidence last night when he was speaking with me. Of course, it must be considered in this light, because he would not want it repeated. "It is a good thing that Elmer Schaake could not have the same material that some of the coaches in the Big Six have. He would whip a lot of them. This is never to be repeated, of course."
