On courts where the four foot distance is impossible, the backboards may be less than four feet but not less than two feet, although two feet is the minimum distance recog- nized in the rules, allowance must be made as in the past for courts which cannot meet even this minimum requirement. (Provision has also been made in the 1940 rules for the optional use of back- boards with curved or ‘‘cut-away’’ corners.) °e SOFTBALL DIAMOND CHANGES : The distance from the front edge of pitcher’s plate to the back corner of home plate has been changed from 40 to 43 feet. The batter’s box, (one on each side of home plate) shall measure three feet by six feet. The front line of the batter’s box shall be 3 feet in front of the line drawn through the center of home plate and the back line shall be 3 feet back of the center of home plate. The inside line on the batter’s box shall be 6 inches from home plate.
