DEPARTMENT OF INSTRUCTION July 9, 1940 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: Replying to your letter of July 2nd, wish to say that before the close of school, I went out to see Harry Newman about the high baskets. He said he had not been able to complete any experimenta- tion satisfactorily. The situation that occurred was this. His team had to play for the city championship, which required them to stay in training two weeks longer than they would have ordinarily had to do, and almost immediately after that, he had to start in his duties as baseball coach. He didn't want to experiment with his first team boys during the two weeks interval, and the time was too short after the championship game (which, by the way, his team won by a one or two point margin) to permit him to get any valid information. Harry said, however, that he is very much interested in the thing and that as soon as school opens next Fall, he will get his boys together and go to work on it so that you will have his reactions well before our next meeting. - With personal regards, 1 am Sincerely yours
