Old Custom Kept
Paper Folk Hungry

Hundreds of years ago workers in
paper-making establishments lived at
the home of the mill owner and ate
their meals at his table. Custom de-
manded that workers cease eating
when the master finished his meal.

According to history, the frugality
of the masters led them to conserve
food at the expense of the workers.
Food was deliberately served steaming

- hot, and before it could cool. suffici-
ently, the master would lay down his
spoon and the workers would be
forced to leave the table hungry.

In Holland, to this day, whenever
‘children guip their food, they are
chided by their parents, who rebuke}
them by asking if they were reared by |
papermakers. \
