THOMAS MEMBER OF NATIONAL FEDERATION OF ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIONS COMMISSIONER ROOM 409 - NATIONAL RESERVE BUILDING TOPGHA April 9, 1942 Dr. Forrest C, Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doctor Allen: Mr. Stone told me when he returned from Lawrence Monday that he had a very pleasant conversation with you at the Rotary dinner. The Association has given up its former practice of selecting an allestate honor roll from the state tournament players. However, some of the sport writers here got together and placed Hall, Parsons; and Carson, McPherson at forwards; Dewell, Newton at center; Joe Thornton, Winfield; and Scott, Newton at guards on the first team. The second team included Lindquist, Ward; and Durnil, El Dorado, at forwards; Gepner, Dodge City, at center; with Powell, Topeka; and Bill Thornton, Winfield, at guards. At the Class A and B tournaments I do not believe any one attempted to pick a team and since I did not see any sessions except the AA here, I am arpretty poor source for information as to how they were playing at the close of the season. However, I have gone through the 48 teams playing in the three state championships and have listed all seniors. I thought perhaps someone may have written about certain boys and such in- formation will tell you whather or not they graduate. I am also enclosing a list of the leading scorers as well as box scores from the tournaments which will appear in our April issue of the magazine out the end of this week. If I may be of any further service, please let me know. Very cordially yours, E. R. STEVENS, PRESIDENT pf Sd INDEPENDENCE J. R. JONES, VICE-PRESIDENT Lees | 7 GARDEN CITY Delmar Curry E. A. An old Newton tradition of adding a state champion- ship at least every five years was kept in tact by the Rail- roaders becoming the second Class AA champion, de- feating Winfield, 29-24, in the finals. It was the eighth state championship for Coach Frank Lindley’s quintet, previous Newton titles having ben won in 1916, 1917, 1921, 1926, 1931, 1936 and 1937. The new Class AA winners disposed of Ward, Dodge City, Wyandotte and Winfield on their way to the cham- pionship. Winfield reached the final bracket by ousting Coffeyville, Manhattan and Topeka. After nosing out Wyandotte, 31-30, in the quarter-finals, El Dorado with- drew from the tournament when it was discovered one of its players, Calvin Garland, was over age. At El Dor- ado’s request, Wyandotte replaced them in the bracket and played Newton in the semi-finals. Although losing the semi-final game, the defending champions came back to win third place by defeating Topeka, 34-29. Fredonia’s First Championship In a dramatic overtime battle, Fredonia outlasted Lyons, defending Class A champion, in a 30-25 thrilling semi-final test and then went on to win the championship by downing Augusta, 35-27, in the finals. It was the first state title for the Tri-Valley champions coached by Allen Burns. Fredonia turned in earlier wins over Smith Center and Hays to set the stage for the feature clash with Lyons. The latter team won third place by defeating Russell, 40-36. Augusta earned its way into the final bracket the hard way, with a one point victory over Medicine Lodge, a two extra period decision over Norton and a seven point conquest of Russell. Halstead found plenty of competition in this year’s Class B tournament, but came through with successive triumphs over Enterprise, Cedar Vale, Powhattan and Arnold. Coached by G. A. Haury after Dave McGill was called into service, Halstead was credited with its first official state championship, although the Mid-Kansas League school won invitation tournaments sponsored by the University of Kansas in 1908 and 1909. Sublette, defending state Class B champion, was eliminated in the regional tournament and did not qualify for the state meet. Don Douglas’s Cardinals employed an offense unseen at Beverly before, but Coach Sax Elliot had prepared the team for it. — Right after the opening whis- tle, Chuck Gibbon and John Deichmann gave Beverly a 4- point lead. HUTCHINSON, s \From The Press Box: THE YOUNG fellow said: “I don’t care how many poi. —if the team gets enough points to win the game. ” And tia fellow who. has develoneg into one of the smoothest pieces of ba: - ball machinery we’ve seen in many a day. We're refering to Walter Quiring, forward on the high school basketball team. He’s a shot maker all right, still ranking high among tle Valley’s scorers. To make shots, you’ve got to get the ball and that’s where Quiring really excells. He has speed, de- ception, a good dribble, basketball hands, and as} indicated by the quoted statement, a great team temperament. We're putting Quiring on the spot, | fe maybe—but we've got to tip you to watch him. S68: Barring the uncertainites of these perilous, he’s destined for coesiste stardom. % * a THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS, LAWRENCE, KANSAS KANSAS STATE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND APPLIED SCI MANHATTAN, KANSAS KANSAS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE OF EMPORIA, KANSAS ForT HAYS KANSAS STATE COLLEGE, : HAYS, KANSAS TAT ae VC KANSAS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE — OF KANSAS - OF PITTSBURG, KANSAS SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND, ae ae = KANSAS CITY, KANSAS ears VR eara 3 SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF, — —BRnanon nc OLATHE, KANSAS BOARD OF REGENTS WESTERN UNIVERSITY, : EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS KANSAS CITY, KANSAS KANSAS VOCATIONAL SCHOOL, TOPEKA, KANSAS Hut chins on, Kansas March 125 1942 e Mre Phog Allen University of Kansas Lawrences Kansas Ss .
