Fredonia closed its season against the same foe, winning 35-27 ...Richard Pfister, Powhattan forward, was the leading individual scorer of the state tournaments, tallying 62 points in four games for a 15.5 average and committed only two personal fouls... Accuracy from the free throw line paid Newton dividends ... The champions were outscored from the field by - Wyandotte and held even by Winfield but neither foe could match the Railroaders from the charity stripe... Coach Johnnie Corrigan’s Powhattan team played four state tournament games and made a total of only 23 fouls! In one game the Indians made four mistakes, in another five and in the other two appearances a scant seven. Powhattan led Halstead, 14-4 at halftime, only to lose 24-22 in the champions’ last half surge... Three of the four quarter-final games, and both semi-final battles in the Class B tournament were two-pointers decided in the final minute of play, one going into an overtime.
