Certainly my fsilure to answer your letter sooner is not @ proper gage of my interest in you and my desire for you to attend the University of Zansas. That fact that you play both sports of basketball and baseball would make you coming here very appealing to me. 7 I received several letters from people telling me of your prowess on both the basketball court and the baseball G@iamond. I am well acquainted with your Coach, Mr. Vernon J, Bradburn, but it is not necessary that I receive further testimonials regarding your athletic ability. And to, I do want to congratulate you on your very excellent scholastic record. When a boy has a good academic record, it's always possible for him to get more work in helping defray his expenses because it is not necessary that he spend as much time on his studies as it would be necessary for some less intelligent boy. | You state in your letter that you will need some help in order to further your education, I will say now that you can definitely count on said work. We pay thirty five cents per hour and I will promise you as much work as you desire on that basis. Please write me and inform me if this is agreeable to you. Coach Rost has described your athletic ability as exceptional, It is his opinion that you have more ability than other St. Louis boys who have attended the University. That is a splendid compliment and I know Otto believes it or he would not have said it. Otte also tells me he thinks it is possible for you to have a job on the playgrounds in 5t. Louis. This boy was very highly recommended and in your return letter you said that you were definitely interested in him and that I should sell him K.U. In case you have forgotten I shall briefly revtew Kenneth's high school basketball career. He made the All-City fowr years in a row. At the same time he was selected three yeras on the All-District team. He has carried weak teams into championships and has always been the leading scorer. While his all-round ability in basketball is superb he is a wonderful lesadee and shows wonderful head work on the floor. His coach uses a shifting man to man defense. I have seen him direct and guide green men on the court in such am manner that would enable them to do a preety fair job of guarding their — men when ordinarily they would have been lost. He would maké you a marvelous " quarterback". I have heard college coaches rave about him including such men as Henry Iba and other Missouri-Valley coaches. He is the first boy that I have ever heard of Edwards of Mogssour being interested in enough to write. I saw a letter 3 from Edwards through the assistant principal to Kenny saying thet he would get a job for the boys this summers in St. Louis for $85.00 to $100.00 a month. Kenny definttely wants te go to Kansas and I frankly think that he is a better boy than either of the two boys that xk you have already gotten from St. Louts. He tells me that he wrote you a letter about bhree weeks ago and has as yeat recetved no answer. Please let me know whether you are still interested in him or not so that I can advise him accordingly. In that case he can go some where else. How i@ every thing in Lawrence. I certainly would like to get back for the Celebration this spring. +t seems, however that everything is done duting the middle of the week, and naturally makes it’ impossible for me . I don't know whether you know that I am now in the centralm office of our board of education serving as a supervisor of physical education. I of course am not associated with any one school any more and as a result do no coaching although I am responsible for the conduct of all the teams and the coaching of those teams. I have missed my own personal contact with the boys but am gradually becoming adapted to my new work. I think that we will be able to erye Wulfemeyer a job on our playgrounds this summer. Appreciate your continuing loyalties. Letter follows." Otto, I have never been busier, + don't believe, than I have this year. In addition to coaching the Varsity Baseball tean, right on the heel of my basketball schedule, I had taken on a lot of speaking dates. The Lettuce and Grapefruit League certainly provided a full schedule. When I took these speaking dates, + did not know that I was to coach the Baseball team. It was practically at the end of basketball geason when they asked me to take the baseball team. Then, I had about six or eight commencement addresses and finished the last one last week- end. Last night they hed a retirement dinner for Dean Schwegler who is giving up his deanship this year but will continue to teach. I was one of the speakers with the subject, "The Dean and his Faculty". Then I have a transcription tomorrow afternoon and had a game with Towa State yesterday afternnon and again today. I'm only telling you these things to let you know why I'm not answering your letter of the 19th, sooner. And, added to this, my secretary that I have had since September, got married May 1st, and it's been a whale of a task, especially, with “im Raport going to Alabama Poly. and Bert DeGroot going into the Aviation Service on the Coast. Raport left last week end and DeGroot, tomorrow. Our teacher of dance, Miss Ulm, is getting married. So, we're busy as the mischief looking for re-placements. Now, down to your good letter. ‘You certainly are a charm to offer to help Kenneth Wulfemeyer with a job on your playground. af you can do that, Ytto, you surely will be doing a wonderful thing for us. 1 wish there were ways that we could be more specific in sowing you how very much we appreciate your kindness. You bet we want Kenneth, And, Otto, if you land him for us, we will pledge you are eternal gratitude. Otto Rost Page Two I have been working in the morning, coaching the baseball team in the afternoons, and then leaving for highschool commencement addresses and driving home in the wee hours of the morning. I am going to be honest with you, Otto. I have not seen Kenneth Wulfemeyer's letter. It perhaps came in the mail when I was out of town and it has been misplaced in my massive correspondence, but I'm asking Miss Christian- Son, my secretary, to find the letter and I will write him immediately. I will also send a carbon copy to you for your perusal. The fact that Kenny definitely wants to go to Sansas makes me want him all the more. _If you will call him and tell him that he will hear from me the next day or so, and that my failure to write was not due to negligence after receiving: his letter but it had not come to my attention. — : Of course he will get a terrible idea of the looks. of my desk, and I may say his idea would be absolutely correct. Doubtless you have received’ the University Catalogue. I called the Registrar's Office day before yesterday and asked that they send you one at your street address in St. Louis. I have been so busily engrossed with my teaching and my recreation work this year that I have had too little time for correspondence. Our recreation work is at night, also, here at the University under lights. So, with early morning and jate night work I find difficulty in making all my proper connections. I'm sorry that I have not been more prompt in writing. You state that your work on the playgrounds close on Labor Day. You come right on up and we will put you to work the day you arrive. I would suggest that you bring some old clothes with you because they will come in handy. I will put you outside on the tennis courts, golf links, etc. until your school work starts. After that, it will be inside work in the towel roo} or in some work connected with our Physical Education Program. You will be able to get in at least eight and one-half hours a dey every day that you are here until school starts. The enclosed clipping from the Yates Center News tells how the team finished in the Tri-Valley basketball circuit. But the remarkable thing about the record isn't told. The team lost two out of the first four games, then proceeded to play the best basketball in the league. It has two very promising boys--a 6 feet, 2 center and this fast lad, Tolle at forward. Tolle was quarterback on the High School football team last Fall and ran two kickoffs back for touchdowns. He looks like the kind of youngster you could take and make into a star. Bert Coleman, the blocky youngster on the K.U. freshman football squad, could very well act as liaison man for you. Both Bob Reed and I were delighted to see how your team came through. Frankly, when I saw the size of the boys, I figured you were due for a bad season. You must have applied some Of the old magic with them. From the tone of McBride's column the Big Six must be getting to be a tough circuit to live in. Mac is a good chastening influence. I'd be glad to know your judgment on these Yates Center boys. Reed joins me in the best of regards and wishes Sincerely yours eH, 3 P.S.: I forgot to say that in more than half of their victories these Yates Center lads came from behind, usually in the last quarter.
