I would like to talk with you and Otto on the proposition of his not going fraternity right away. Also, if he does not want to go out for football I believe I can arrange it so he can make his expenses more easily than if he goes out for both football and basketball. Many of the football men are not able to go out for other sports on account of the higher specialized sport taking so much time and since basketball is similar to this as a time-taker, I believe that I have an arrangement whereby Otto can make it. Of course, if Vic Hurt would take him, I would be glad for that arrangement to happen. But, I do not want Vie to think that I'm asking him to take some of my men on his football load. You can rest assured that I will see Otto through. I will arrange for his board and room and his work. But of course if he goes fraternity then they will expect him to work and also to pay fraternity dues besides board and room. When this is all figured up, the boy doesn't have time — enough to work. If he sticks to one sport and doesn't go fraternity his first year, I'm sure that we can arrange it. And then after he is located if some fraternity wants to take him and give him a job and they will | permit him to carry his other work, then well and good. My plan is to take Otto under my wing, guide him and advise with him just as I would one of my own youngsters. If that arrange- ment can be made, I'm very sure that he will be happy here and I will see that he gets a full college life with none of the dissappointments that a boy has when he comes unguided and sometimes uncared for. | I hope you can come up, Ed, because you, Otto and I can discuss matters which will be for Otto's good and Otto will have confidence that these things will be done, especially if you're able to accompany him. ‘With all good wishes, I an, Sincerely yours, Director of Fhysical Education and Recreation-Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach. FCA:re June 27th, 1941 otk Mr. Otto Scharllbacher Sublette, Kansas Dear Otto: I'm happy to have your good letter of the 24th instant and to learn that you plan to come up the first of August. Yes I will be here and shall be happy to see you. Now don't let anyone pack you up in a car and take you out of Kansas. I kmow you're going to be so much happier here than in any other State. I'm happy to have you make your decision for the University of Kansas. I know you'll never regret it and I want you to be wearing a Jayhawker uniform. Here is one thought that I want you to ponder on, Otto, and that is this: There has never been but one boy that's played three years on a Kansas Varsity basketball team from 1922 until 1941, inclusively, that is not wearing a gold basketball. And some of them are wearing three. This boy, Russell "Rub" Thompson dropped out of school and came back on one of our lean years. So, I want you, Otto, to be one of those for twenty straight years who will be wearing a Big Six Championship gold basketball. Give Eddie Hall my kindest regards. I think he is a great fellow and one of the best athletes that we ever had. I have always been especially fond of him. He is clean, courageous, and an all-around-good-fellow. Mr. Vernon Sivertsen, Ru Heights, S. Dakota. Tear Vernon: Pardon my delay in not answering your good letter of July 24th sooner. Our summer session closed soon after I received your letter and being in the midst of the closing of school hindered me somewhate Tt would not be possible for me to aid anyone in > avoiding tuition. However, if a boy could have a relative legally adopt him, naturally that individual would not have | to pay out-of-state tuition. I told Wilfred Thompson that there was one boy adopted here by ea lawyer, but they did not have my aid or cooperation, and I was merely telling hin ' what happened and not suggesting thet boys do such a thing unless it was the desire of the femily and the relatives. I would be glad to help you in any way possible, but you can wumdorstand that it would not be up to me to take a part in this unless the boy and the family were anxious to carry through this projects Board can be had here for $5.00 per week, and rooms will be $8 and $10 a month eccording to the location. ‘The tuition is $150,00 ea year, and the chances for a job ere goods But of course a boy cennot expect to go to school full time end earn over $20.00 a month. I am sending you a pamphlet on physical education end I am asking that the University meil you a catalog. This week I am leaving for Boone, Iowa, where I engage in a coaching school with Clark Shaughnessy, Bernie Bierman, -and Henry Tha in teaching football end basketball to the Towa High School Athletic Coaches Association. PCAs re , July 3rd, 1941 Mr. Glenn "Ducky" Teel Caldwell, Kansas Dear "Ducky" t I have just finished talking to Arnold's Market and find that they are not quite certain as to what boy they will hire. They have a young boy there nemed Harwood who is attending the University and if he comes back to school at the University, doubt- less they will take him on. I called Hunter Bros., but Wr. Hunter will not be back until late this afternoon. Then I called Mr. Landreth and he stated thet he had also received a letter from you but he had not angwered it as yet but he was going to tell you when he wrote, for you to come in and ses him when you get to town. He hires several boys each year and I feel pretty certéin thet you will get a job at this place if you please him. He is a fine gentleman and has three wonderful children, two of whom have finished with excep- tionally fine honors in the University and the third one was an outstanding student in High School. So, I believe you have good prospects there. As I suggested, I would come up a.little early so that you can be one of the first on the ground. The old adage, "The early bird catches the worm", is still true. With best wishes to you and all of our good Caldwell friends, I am, Sincerely, Director of Physical Education and Recreation- Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach. FCA: re
